- Who can make a referral?
Any member of the OCU community may make a referral.
- How do I make a referral?
If you feel there is an immediate threat, call OCUPD at 405-208-5911.
For behavior concerns that are not immediately threatening please complete the online Person of Concern referral forms.
Directly contact any member of the BIT.
- What happens after I make a referral?
BIT will meet twice per month or more as needed. When informed of concerning behavior, the team will initiate an investigation. Based on the investigation, the team will recommend one of the following actions:
- No further action is needed
- Additional information is necessary to evaluate the risk/threat level based on National Behavioral Intervention Team Association Threat Assessment Tool
- Refer for medical or psychological care
- Refer to initiate appropriate student or employee disciplinary action
- Refer to the legal system to initiate appropriate criminal proceedings
- What happens to the person of concern in the BIT process?
The primary goals of the BIT process are to:
- Keep the referred person and the campus safe from harm.
- Provide the referred person with helpful tools to understand the impact of their behaviors on the campus community to improve their situation.
- Eliminate or reduce the distractions associated with the concerning behavior.
- How do I know if it is a BIT issue or if it is more appropriately handled by other campus resources?
Typically, concerning behaviors that do not pose an immediate threat to self or others are a concern and could escalate if not addressed should be referred to BIT. Please note that the BIT is obligated to take appropriate action based on the nature of information being shared. BIT may contact the reporter for further information or details.
The most important thing is to SHARE BECAUSE YOU CARE. If another campus resource is more appropriate, the BIT will refer the student.

- Will disciplinary action be taken against those deemed a “threat” and if so, what type of specific discipline will be administered and by whom?
Referrals to BIT are not complaints that automatically engage an employee or student in a discipline process. BIT will conduct a thorough review of the referral to determine if the behavior warrants a review by either human resources or the Dean of Students. The purpose of BIT is not to get people “in trouble” or “punish”, rather the BIT process intends to assist the referred person.
- How do I tell if it’s something I should refer? Are there specific criteria of behavior/actions that must exist before I refer to BIT?
You do not have to make this determination. The BIT will do this for you. The most important thing for you to do is refer a behavior of concern. If youare concerned about the safety and/or welfare of a student or employee and you are not able to address the situation directly, then it would be best to refer it. Referring the person of concern to BIT will help them receive the assistance they need.
- Will the person know that I am the person who referred her or him to BIT?
BIT will not tell the referred person who specifically made the referral; however, a referred person will be given specific information about the concerning behavior so that they can respond to the concern. It is possible that the referred person may determine who made the report based on the circumstances.
- What if I am not ready to make a referral, but I just need some advice about handle a behavioral concern?&
You are always welcome to contact any member of the BIT with questions and concerns. In many cases, the referring person benefits from ideas for managing difficult circumstances and the matter is resolved without a report.
- What should I do if I have a question not listed above?
All questions are welcome. Don’t be afraid to ask, someone else may be thinking the same thing. Please feel free to contact any member of the BIT with any question. It is the most sincere desire for the BIT process to to be effective.
