Living Treasure in American Dance Awards Over the years, Oklahoma City University has honored individuals who have contributed significantly to American dance and dance education through its Living Treasure in American Dance awards. Inspired by the Chinese tradition of honoring leading artists while they are still living, OCU has honored Tommy Sutton, Honi Coles, Al Gilbert, Gus Giordano, Buster Brown, Maceo Anderson, Peg Leg Bates, Harold Cromer, Jimmy Slyde, Dianne Walker, Cholly Atkins, Leonard Reed and Marion Coles. Dance writer, historian, and educator, Melba Huber was also recognized for lifetime achievement in dance education. The 2005 Living
Treasure Award was presented to Arthur Duncan
. American Dance Awards 1999 marked the inaugural presentation of the Preservation of Our Heritage-American Dance Award. Oklahoma City University's School of American Dance & Arts Management continues their recognition of excellence in our American dance history by honoring those people who have supported American dance through their advocacy. These are the spokespeople for American dance and its preservation through the years and into the new millennium. Without these writers, historians, and champions, the world would be less aware of the uniquely American dance forms and the talents involved. It is through their diligence and dedication that American dance remains in the hearts and minds of the American public and the world. Melba Huber, Sali Ann Kriegsman, Jacqui Malone, and Robert Reed have received Preservation of our Heritage-American Dance Awards in past years. Al Heyward and Carl Schlesinger were the recipients of the 2001 Preservation of Our Heritage-American Dance Awards. Silver Belles producer and manager Geraldine Rhodes-Kennedy also received a 2001 Preservation of Our Heritage Award. Patricia Goulding received the award in 2006. Oklahoma City University conferred the Honorary Doctor of Performing Arts degree on Donald O'Connor on Friday, December 8, 2000. In February 2002, OCU recognized the accomplishments of nine more legendary tappers by presenting them with honorary doctorates. |
