Celebrating the American Spirit

Oklahoma City University’s critically acclaimed American Spirit Dance Company, under the direction of Jo Rowan, will take stage March 14-16 for a unique production, celebrating the American heritage. The 2002 Spring Show will highlight the patriotism and spirit of the American people while entertaining audiences with technical virtuosity, dazzling costumes and fantastic choreography. Performances will be presented March 14-15 at 8 pm and March 16 at 2pm and 8 pm, in Kirkpatrick Auditorium on Oklahoma City University‘s campus. Tickets are now available at the OCU Dance and Entertainment Box Office. Call (405) 557-6090 for more information.

The 2002 Show begins with the pomp and pride of the Stars and Stripes and continues on with I Want to be a Rockette, a production number that focuses on part of the American Dream, and Santa Fe Nights, a look at the culture of the American West. Rowan’s Irish Ballet also makes its debut performance with a suite of six pieces that comment on the hope and freedom that the American Shores promised to Irish-American immigrants as they came to this country. At the conclusion of the ballet is the stunning God Bless America.

A contemporary flair dominates the Second Act, with pieces including For You and For Me (to the music of Grammy nominated artist India Arie), STOMP-esque rhythm pieces, hip-hop numbers and much more. The American Spirit Dance Company is a sure-fire hit for audiences of all ages.

Nearly 130 dancers from across the country comprise the American Spirit Dance Company. From ballerinas to Rockettes, hip-hop divas to rhythm tappers, audiences will have the opportunity to view the best and brightest upcoming stars of the entertainment world. Their professionalism has been revered by many, most recently including Rick Rogers of the Daily Oklahoman in his review of the American Spirit Dance Company’s performance in Yuletide Magic 2001. OCU graduates go on to become the top dancers on Broadway, in music videos and all forms of professional entertainment. Now’s the chance to be able to say, “I knew them when...”
