BACHELOR OF ARTS: ORGANIZATIONAL COMMUNICATION

PLUS offers a liberal studies major with a concentration in organizational communication. To earn this Bachelor of Arts degree, students must complete their general education and concentration requirements. Additional hours of elective study may be required to complete the minimum 124 hours of credit needed for graduation.

This concentration is designed for employees and managers who depend on strong communication skills in the business environment on a daily basis. It provides the opportunity for adults to have a better understanding of the people with whom they work. Its focus is on interpersonal skills, problem-solving skills, study of group dynamics, and adult behavior.

Program Structure
In addition to general education course requirements, students must complete a minimum of 30 credit hours in specific communication studies. Classes meet one evening a week for eight weeks during the spring and fall terms and for six weeks during the summer I and summer II sessions, beginning every January, March, May, June,August, and October. Students may begin course work in any session.A minimum of 15 credit hours in the area of concentration must be earned through Oklahoma City University.

Introduction to Organizational Communication
This course concerns the processes and meaning of human communication in organizational contexts.With a goal of improving the outcomes of communication in organizations, this area of study covers topics such as organizational climate, culture, communication networks, channels, the media, and superior-subordinate relationships.

Interpersonal Communication
This course concerns communication between two persons and among small groups. Its focus is on issues of intimacy,
power, and conflict resolution.

Ethics of Communication
Students will develop a systematic means of evaluating the ethics of human communication in all of its settings.

Small Group Communication
This course covers theory and practice of participation in problem solving conferences,techniques of leadership, and the dynamics of group interaction.

Principles of Management and Organizations
This course provides an in-depth study of the role of management in the business setting, as well as a study of the concepts and factors of human behavior in the organizational environment. Motivation and leadership
are stressed. Included is the consideration of concepts of psychology and social psychology of the individual and the group as applicable to industrial organizations.

Principles of Public Relations
This course is designed to explain the origin, evolution, and nature of the profession and to explore areas of knowledge vital to the public relations practitioner, and to relate those areas of knowledge to practical applications. It investigates public opinion analysis, communications theory, and use of various kinds of research by the profession.

Organizational Innovation Development and Change
This course identifies and describes the eight steps in organizational development interventions, describes the history of organizational development, conducts a “communication problem specific” literature review, and prepares a pre-training assessment.

Leadership
The purpose of this course is to prepare students to become effective leaders within the business enterprise. Focusing on current leadership theories and their application to the professional business community, the course includes the processes of leadership, the leader, the follower, and the situation.

Cross Cultural Management
This course provides students with an applied understanding of interpersonal management and the complexities associated with diversity in international management. Students will apply class discussion to actual business case situations.
