Chemistry Department
Reasons to Study Chemistry or Biochemistry

An OCU student poses in a chemistry lab.

The Department of Chemistry offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Chemistry and Biochemistry as well as a Chemistry minor.  Both majors provide strong academic preparation for those interested in chemistry or pursuing advanced study in science and medicine.  The minor is strongly suggested for students of other majors who are interested in the medical professions.

A Chemistry or Biochemistry degree can launch your career in science or medicine or something less traditional.  Our graduates have a long history of admission to medical and Ph.D. programs.  Those interested in immediate employment can find positions in health research, environmental monitoring and compliance, or in small business.

For those interested in less traditional careers, a background in chemistry can prepare you well for business, law, education, and many other fields.  See our Professional Opportunities link for more information or read this story from the Chronicle of Education.

Why Study Chemistry or Biochemistry at OCU?

An OCU student smiles in one of the University's chemistry labs.

  • Chemistry and Biochemistry are excellent curricula for preparing for careers in Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Veterinary Medicine.

  • OCU offers smaller classes sizes. Rarely will a class be larger than 24 students.

  • We have experienced, caring faculty who are focused on teaching and student success.

  • Our laboratory courses are taught by faculty members, not by graduate students.

  • There is a friendly atmosphere in which students help each other and close interaction between the Chemistry and Biology departments in the Biochemistry program.
