Tiffany van der Merwe is an Associate Professor of Dance, teaches on the jazz and tap faculty, and choreographs for the American Spirit Dance Company.
Known for her passion to preserve our jazz history, she is pursuing an international research effort to study with our remaining jazz legends. She studied intensively at the Giordano Jazz Dance Center in Chicago, and recently, returned from the south of France, studying with Matt Mattox. She traveled to New York City to examine the Luigi technique. Van der Merwe plans to unite the influences of these techniques with the jazz trends of today, thus, providing students the opportunity to explore both.
She has served as assistant director, choreographer, and master teacher for the American Spirit Dance Company’s 2004 Friendship Thru Dance Tour to Taiwan. She toured through Europe, Scandinavia, and the Balkan region for LaTour Productions, for extensive USO performances for service men and women. Her travels have taken her to the Bahamas dancing for Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, as well as to Chicago where she danced at the Giordano Jazz Dance Center for choreographers such as Debbie Giordano, Kirby Reed, John Lehrer, Fury Gold, Michael Taylor, as well as at the Kinetic Dance Theater. She has worked closely with internationally acclaimed Mystique Productions as dance captain and soloist.
Her choreography has been seen at Dance Chicago, aboard the Sovereign of the Seas, for Royal Caribbean, Oklahoma City Philharmonic’s Yuletide Magic, Oklahoma Opera & Music Theater Company, the Lyric Theater of Oklahoma, the Addy Awards, the Awards of Excellence Ball and the American Spirit Dance Company.
She served as the director and primary choreographer of the Middlesex Dance Company in Concord, Massachusetts. As a master teacher, van der Merwe has taught on three continents and throughout the Midwest.
