| Our
new Bachelor of Science in American Dance Pedagogy degree was designed
for the student who wants a life-long career as an extraordinarily well-prepared
teacher rather than a career as a performer.
Many “dance pedagogy”
programs offered by colleges and universities in North America consist
only of one or two low credit-hour ballet or modern pedagogy courses
tagged onto existing dance degrees.
Our
new degree will provide students with a depth and breadth of study
never attempted by other dance programs. Students will be required
to take five credit hours of tap pedagogy, five credit hours of
jazz pedagogy, and five credit hours of ballet pedagogy. Instead
of one course in dance history, they will take three courses,
one of which will cover the history of teaching dance.
Instead of
a few credit hours of choreography, our American Dance Master
Teacher Program undergraduates will take six credit hours and
will face challenges such as, “choreograph a three minute
dance in the style of Fosse for fourteen year old dancers at an
intermediate level. Now, choreograph to the same music for eighteen
year old dancers at an advanced level.”
Students
will study dance health, anatomy and physiology for dancers, dance
studio technology, and dance studio management. And, they will
take courses in management, accounting, economics, marketing,
advertising, and public relations. In addition to the above, they
will have a solid liberal arts education through our general education
requirements.
We have designed
the American Dance Master Teacher undergraduate degree to serve
the needs of both young dance students who need to continue dance
technique training and older dancers who have completed a performance
career and want to transition to become a great teacher.
Thus,
a young dancer can continue to learn and improve through Jazz
Technique and Analysis, Tap Technique and Analysis, and/or Ballet
Technique and Analysis. An older student who demonstrates substantial
and sufficient knowledge of tap, jazz, and ballet technique would
not be required to take dance technique classes.
Whether you
are a young dancer who wants to be a great teacher rather than
a performer, or a mature dancer who wants to transition to a new
career as a great teacher, our Bachelor of Science in Dance Pedagogy
has the flexibility to help you realize your goal.
