International Awareness Week - November 14-18, 2011

Discovering the World One Student at a Time


Native American Worship Service

The entire campus community is invited to a special worship service that is being offered as a part of the homecoming celebration.  The service, which will be done in the Native American tradition, is being coordinated by Rev. David Wilson, conference superintendent of the Oklahoma Indian Missionary Conference, and an OCU Trustee.  The speaker for the service will be Bud Sahmaunt, former athletic director of OCU.

 

The service will be on Sunday, November 7, 2010, at 10:45 a.m. in the Bishop W. Angie Smith Chapel. 


Oxford Professor Will Speak on October 11, 2010

Tariq Ramadan, a professor of contemporary Islamic studies at Oxford University will speak on campus Monday, October 11, in the Petree Recital Hall, Fine Arts Building.

Ramadan has been named one of the top 100 most influential thinkers in the 21st century by Time. Through his writings and lectures he has contributed substantially to the debate on the issues of Muslims in the West and Islamic revival in the Muslim world. He is active both at the academic and grassroots levels lecturing extensively throughout the world on social justice and dialogue between civilizations. He is currently president of the European Muslim Network think tank in Brussels, Belgium.

Ramadan is the author of numerous articles and more than 20 books including What I Believe, Radical Reform, Islamic Ethics and Liberation, and his forthcoming book, A Quest for Meaning: Developing a Philosophy of Pluralism.

Former Ambassador to Lecture September 28, 2010

Nabil Fahmy, former ambassador to the U.S. from Egypt will present a lecture, "Winds of Change in the Middle East" at 5:30 p.m., Septemer 28, 2010, in the Kerr McGee Auditorium.

Nabil Fahmy is presently the founding dean of the School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at the American University in Cairo. He serves on McLarty Associates’ Board of Counselors and he is also the chair of the Monterey California Center for Nonproliferation Studies’ Middle East Project.

Ambassador Fahmy has served as Ambassador of Egypt to the United States (1999 – 2008), as Egypt’s ambassador to Japan (1997 – 1999) as well as Political Advisor to the Foreign Minister. He is a career diplomat who has played an active role in the numerous efforts to bring peace to the Middle East, as well as in international and regional disarmament affairs. He headed the Egyptian delegation to the Middle East Peace Process Steering Committee in 1993 and the Egyptian delegation to the Multilateral Working Group on Regional Security and Arms Control emanating from the Madrid Peace Conference from December 1991.

Over the years, Ambassador Fahmy has been a member of the Egyptian Missions to the United Nations (Disarmament and Political Affairs) in Geneva and New York. He was elected vice chairman of the First Committee on Disarmament and International Security Affairs of the 44th Session of the UN General Assembly in 1986.

From 1999 until 2003, he was a member of the UN Secretary General’s Advisory Board of Disarmament Matters where he served as its chairman in 2001.

Ambassador Fahmy has written extensively on Middle East Politics, Peacemaking and Regional Security, and International Governance. He received his Bachelor of Science in Physics/Mathematics and his Master of Arts in Management, both from the American University in Cairo.

Wiley College and Oklahoma City University Reunited

The Wiley College debate team came to Oklahoma City for an historic debate in 1931. We have invited the college’s administration, faculty, and students to return in 2008 to re-enact the original debate and take part in a weekend of activities October 24 - 26, 2008. The first event of the weekend is a presentation of the film, The Great Debaters, which was written about the famous debate team from Wiley College and their coach, Melvin B. Tolson. The film will be screened in the McDaniel University Center at 8pm on Friday, Oct 24.

There are several events scheduled for Saturday, Oct 25:

  • 2:00 p.m. Women’s Basketball Game, Freede Wellness and Activity Center
  • 4:00 p.m. Men’s Basketball Game, Freede Wellness and Activity Center

    Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m., a worship service will be held at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 222 NW 15th Street, Oklahoma City. Bishop Robert E. Hayes, Jr., Rev. Bob Long, Wiley College President Dr. Haywood L. Strickland, and Oklahoma City University President Tom McDaniel will participate in the service. Musical performances will be presented by choirs from St. Luke’s, Wiley College, and Oklahoma City University.

    Clara Luper Day
    Fifty years ago, on August 19, 1958, twelve Negro children and their youth advisor, Clara Luper, began sit-in demonstrations at Katz Drug Store in Oklahoma City. The sit-ins continued from 1958 until 1964, becoming the nation's longest recurring, uninterrupted, peaceful civil rights demonstration in the history of the United States.

    Oklahoma City University trustee, Clara Luper, is being honored by The Freedom Center on Saturday, August 23, 2008. There will be a parade at Pitts Park, 1920 N Kate, in Oklahoma City beginning at 10am, Open House at The Freedom Center at 12:30pm, and a dinner at 5th Street Baptist Church, 801 NE 5th Street, at 7pm.

    Tony Coleman served three Senate Pro Tempores of the Oklahoma Senate over seven years before entering private practice. Tony holds a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from the University of Oklahoma (2001) and a Juris Doctorate from Oklahoma City University (2005). Tony is a member of the prestigious National College for DUI Defense. Tony is also a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the American Bar Association, the Oklahoma Bar Association, the Oklahoma County Bar Association, and is licensed to practice in the United States District Court in the Western District of Oklahoma. Tony is founder and partner in the law firm of Goza, Washington, & Coleman.

    Otis Collier, author and recruiter, presented two hands-on lab workshops on mining the Internet for exceptional faculty and staff candidates.

    Dr. George Wright, author, and president of Prairie View A&M University, in Prairie View, Texas, led discussions on the benefits of a diverse faculty with a diverse group of OCU faculty and administration. He also presented a keynote address to the campus community.
