Humanities Program
THE PROGRAM
The humanities major is designed for students who desire a broad undergraduate education with some specialization in one or two areas.
By providing a broad, general education, the humanities degree is excellent preparation for students wishing to pursue higher degrees and careers in a variety of fields, including English, law, and mass communications.
In addition to the General Education requirements, a minimum of 30 hours and a maximum of 40 hours in coursework from the Humanities Division are required for a major in Humanities. Any hours in Humanities beyond the maximum of 40 must count as electives.
All coursework presented as a requirement for the Humanities major must have received a grade of "C" or higher. A minimum of 12 semester hours in Humanities coursework must be completed in residence at Oklahoma City University.
MAJOR REQUIREMENTS
Total Credit Hours: 30-40
Distribution of the coursework must reflect at least one course (beyond the General Education requirements) from each of the seven departments in Humanities as listed below.
Core Courses: Art - a basic course. English - A course beyond the Literature required by the general education curriculum. Mass Communications - A basic course Modern Languages - One course beyond foundation requirements Philosophy - Any 2000-level philosophy course not used to fulfill the general education requirements Religion - Any 2000-level philosophy course not used to fulfill the general education requirements Theater - Consult advisor
Upper-Division Coursework - Fifteen hours of additional coursework at the 3000 or 4000 level from at least three different departments in any area of humanities.
Capstone - The Humanities senior must take a capstone course. That student may choose to fulfill this requirement in one of two ways:
1. The student may choose to produce an integrated project within one or more of the three areas specialty reflected in his/her upper division coursework. This project will be supervised by any professor in one of those disciplines.
2. The student may choose to take a pre-established, department-specific capstone or a modification of it with permission of the Chair of that department.
