Judicial Clerkships

A judicial clerkship can be a very valuable experience. Many employers perceive judicial clerkships to be significant achievements. There is no better opportunity to gain first-hand experience about the inner workings of the judicial system and it is this insight that can command a premium when seeking employment after the clerkship. Competition for these positions is high. While there are positions at the federal, state and local levels, there is wide variation as to the number and frequency of open positions. Because of the uniqueness of this opportunity, i.e. positions usually last from one to two years; students need to have a full understanding of what a clerkship is (difference between federal, state and local), what a clerk does, the value of a clerkship as credential and experience, and the compensation system. It is recommended that students seek counseling before making a decision to pursue this opportunity.
