AmeriCorps Attorneys serve up to two 11-month terms, starting in August 2008. Positions are located at sites in Los Angeles, New Orleans, Boston, San Francisco, Jacksonville, Helena, and other cities around the country. 4. Summer Corps Report

In 2007, 347 Summer Corps members provided direct legal services to over 15,000 individuals in need across the country. Together, they:

  • Represented 121 Equal Justice Works member law schools;
  • Built capacity at 233 host organizations;
  • Served in 37 states and the District of Columbia; and
  • Included 35 Katrina Summer Corps members who provided aid to survivors in the Gulf Coast region.

Summer Corps is designed not only to make concrete change in communities, but also to change the lives of participating law students. Feedback from members regarding their experiences has been overwhelmingly positive. When Jesus Barraza, a Summer Corps member at HIV/AIDS Legal Services Alliance in Los Angeles was asked about why his summer experience is important, he said, "Law school is teaching me how to write and argue, but only my project has taught me how to listenEvery time a client tells me, 'Me da gusto que usted trajaba aqui' ('I'm so glad that you work here'), it makes up for the arduous and tedious hours I spent studying as a first year law student."

The 2008 Summer Corps program will provide 350 law students with the opportunity to earn a $1,000 AmeriCorps education award voucher in exchange for 300 hours of service. The online application will be available on the Equal Justice Works website between March 19 and April 2, 2008. More details regarding eligibility, the application and selection process, and program requirements will be posted in January.
