FREDERICK DOUGLASS MOOT COURT COMPETITION TRYOUTS

All interested upper division (second, third, and fourth year) students are invited to try out for the Frederick Douglass Moot Court Competition.  The Frederick Douglass Moot Court Competition is dedicated to preserving the legacy of Frederick Douglass, a nineteenth century writer, publisher, and orator who became internationally renowned for his advocacy in the cause of liberty.  The competition problem typically involves issues of federal law with a constitutional dimension.  Over 150 law schools participate in this national competition.  Team members must be members of the OCU School of Law BLSA organization and must complete BLSA’s community service requirement.

Oklahoma City University School of Law will sponsor one team for the competition.  A team consists of two members; each member will contribute to the research and writing necessary for the team’s brief and will participate in oral argument during the competition.

Candidates for a team must provide two copies of a writing sample to a faculty administrative assistant in Room 240, Gold Star Building, no later than 5 p.m. Friday, September 21, 2007.  The writing sample should be an accurate reflection of your research, writing, and analytical abilities and must be the result of your sole authorship.  The writing sample may be an office memorandum or a trial-level or appellate brief.  Your oral argument tryout must be based upon the writing sample you submit.

Tryouts will be held on Sunday, September 23, 2007, from 3-5 p.m. in Room 114 in the Sarkeys Law Center.  Each tryout will be fifteen minutes in length and will consist of an oral presentation by the candidate on the subject matter of the writing sample and questions from the “bench” during the presentation.  Interested candidates should sign up for a tryout time on the sign-up sheet posted on the door of the Faculty Lounge on the second floor of Sarkeys.

Team members will be selected on the basis of their speaking and writing abilities, their current academic record, and their desire to fully participate in the responsibilities of the team and as representatives of Oklahoma City University School of Law in a national moot court competition.  The team membership will be announced no later than 5 p.m. on Tuesday, September 25, 2007.  Please direct any questions to ljones@okcu.edu.
