Debt Management

Law School is a significant financial investment.  It is important that you take the necessary steps to minimize your debt and maintain a strong credit history.  Most law students assume considerable loans and it is important to be an informed borrower.  No loans are identical and it is important to understand the differences.  Educate yourself about the financial aid and loan processes, research scholarship opportunities, and commit yourself to making choices about housing, food, entertainment, and transportation that will reduce your total costs of attendance and reduce your total loan package.

OCU LAW strongly encourages you to create a comprehensive budget as you prepare for your law school experience.  We advise that you eliminate consumer debt, including car payments before you enroll.  We encourage students to accept only as much loan funding as absolutely necessary.  Be prepared to live like a student and eliminate non-essentials until you pass the bar!

Employment during Law School

Along with the American Bar Association, OCU LAW recommends that a full-time student not have any outside employment during the first year. Part-time (evening) students and upper-division students are required to base the amount of hours of outside employment on the number of credits being taken. For example, students working 15 hours, should take 13-16 credit hours; 20 hours, should take 11-12 credit hours; and 40 hours, should take 8-10 credit hours.
