Judge Arnold Battise retires
(Posted on May 11, 2006)
Administrative Law Judge Arnold S. Battise has retired from federal service after 43 plus years of federal service. Judge Battise has served with the Social Security Administration Office of Hearings and Appeals since July 1990. Immediately prior to that, he had been with the Office of General Counsel of the Department of Health and Human Services. He also has federal civilian service with the U. S. Department of Labor and the U. S. Air Force at Tinker AFB, and military service with the U. S. Navy. He is a 1971 graduate of the Oklahoma City University School of Law. At the time, Dean of the Law School John Hervey taught Contracts. Assistant Dean Ted Foster taught Legal Method. Marian Opala, Wayne Quinlan and Richard Coulson were professors. Each of the professors at OCU was a practicing attorney during the day, and OCU had no day law school. Each of the professors welcomed the incoming freshman class of 1967, which included Dr. John Hale, the President of Langston University, two FBI agents, four IRS agents, one deputy sheriff, and Carolyn Sifford, who drove in to classes every night from Wichita, KS. Professor Erdberg noted in his welcoming remarks that ‘we have one aborigine’ in the incoming class, referring to Arnold Battise. Arnold Battise is a fullblood member of the Alibamo-Koasati Indian Nation, with the Reservation in Polk County, TX. He has been proud to represent the Indian Health Service, which is a part of the Department of Health and Human Services, within the Dallas Region, and particularly the Albuquerque Area Office. He has also represented the Navajo Area Office, the Oklahoma Area Office, and the Cherokee Area Office in Cherokee, NC as part of his duties. He has been active in Indian affairs during his adult life, and will, and does, continue to participate in the governmental affairs of his Nation. In summary, he notes that at the time he began law school, with his growing family and his need to be employed full time, he could not have attended any other law school and still have been able to support his family. He comments that the legal education afforded to him at OCU was outstanding because of the excellent faculty, and salutes in particular Marian Opala, Wayne Quinlan, and Carmon Harris. These three individuals, in his mind, were especially influential in that they not only provided instruction in how to think like a lawyer, based on everyday applications and practical experiences, but also otherwise provided examples of what a lawyer should be.

Gerald L. Gamble, JD ’68, Receives Bishop Paul W. Milhouse Award
(Posted on December 12, 2005)
Dr. Gerald L. Gamble, JD ’68 is the 2005 recipient of the Bishop Paul W. Milhouse Award. Presented at the Oklahoma City University University-Church Relations Christmas Dinner on December 9th, the award is named in honor of Bishop Paul W. Milhouse in recognition of his dynamic appeal in calling the church back to ownership of Oklahoma City University. His firm stand and appeal immediately brought about dramatic changes as he challenged the church and community to return Oklahoma City University to strength and stature. Since those dark days before Bishop Milhouse, miraculous progress has been made, as evidenced by the financial support that The United Methodist Church gives to the university.
The recipient of the Milhouse Award is determined from individual nominations made by Conference leaders and members of the University-Church Relations Committee. Members of the University-Church Relations Committee review all nominations, then vote by secret ballot for one outstanding individual to receive the award.
Since 1982, each year during the dinner, the Bishop Paul W. Milhouse Award has been presented to a person who is indicative of the Milhouse standard of excellence. This special recognition is well deserved, for the vision of the recipients extends beyond the moment and because their faith has been expressed in concrete ways in their community and at Oklahoma City University. Prior to December 9th, only two couples had received this prestigious award. Dr. Gamble and his wife, Jane Jayroe Gamble, BA Music ’69, became the third couple to receive this great honor as Mrs. Gamble was the recipient of the award in 2001.
