OCU LAW Students Join Effort To Protect Next Week’s Election
One week from today voters will go to the polls in one of the most closely-followed and historic elections in America’s history. OCU LAW students Sean Spivey and Angela Singleton have joined a volunteer effort to monitor the voting process and answer questions by voters who experience difficulty at their polling places.
Spivey and Singleton are a part of Impact, a nonprofit, nonpartisan volunteer group who will station themselves at polling places next Tuesday wearing black t-shirt that read "Election Protection." The group, founded in 2004 in New York City, hopes to monitor at least 10 Oklahoma County precincts this election day, helping voters who have accidentally gone to the wrong polling place or whose names have been removed from voter registration rolls. Many OCU undergraduate students are volunteering with the group as well.
Impact still needs volunteers; anyone interested in joining its volunteer effort may contact the Professional and Career Development Center.
The Oklahoman interviewed Spivey for a story about Impact’s efforts in today’s edition. Full text of the article is available on the Oklahoman’s website.
Students who are unsure about voting practices or who do not know their polling place may visit the Oklahoma State Election Board’s website; it also contains information about the candidates and state questions that are on this year’s ballot.
