Listserv Instructions

Purpose of Listserv

Oklahoma City University School of Law is committed to providing an environment for students to communicate regarding their educational and professional lives. To that end, as it relates to communication methods that use technology, students are encouraged to use the available email lists and listservs. Use of the university and law school email lists and listservs is governed by the university’s Student Code of Conduct and the university’s Computer Use Policy. To accommodate the desire for students to communicate about issues that do not fall into the typical categories of use for the email lists, the law school has created listservs which are described below.

In general, the email lists, i.e. @ Law Students or the other lists derived from this should be used to provide information and announcements of meetings and events. Topics outside this range of discussion should be sent using the listserv option. These would include things such as national, state, and local political matters and other issues of personal interest.

Subscribing to Lists

You will be automatically subscribed to listserv membership according to class (i.e. either the 1L list or the upper division list). No action is necessary on your part as long as you wish to remain subscribed. Additionally, there is an optional list inclusive of all law students. You must subscribe if you wish to be able to send messages to or receive messages from this list (see section “Subscribing to Lists” for detailed instructions). List membership is limited to the first 500 subscribers (there are +/- 600 law students).

Activating Your Subscription

It is necessary to register a password with the listserv before you can use it. To do so, open a web browser and navigate to http://listserv.okcu.edu then click the “Post to the List” link to launch a login window (See Figure 1). Since this is the first time you are logging in, you will click the “get a new LISTSERV password” link which will launch the form from which you will designate your password (See Figure 2). The only email address you may use is your official OCU email ending in a “.stu”.

As a security measure, a confirmation email is then sent to your email from which you must confirm the password change. Open the message and click the embedded link which will launch a browser window indicating your password has been registered (See Figure 3).

You are now registered and able to use the listserv. You will need this email and password combination to be able to view archived postings and make changes to your list membership(s).

Subscribing to Lists

To subscribe to a list, simply send a message from the email account you wish to have subscribed (in this case you will be using your name.stu@okcu.edu account) to listserv@listserv.okcu.edu with the command “subscribe listname” in the message body (see Figure 4). The listserv will send a reply to that email address containing a link you must click on to confirm your subscription. After clicking the confirmation link, you will receive another email confirming your subscription.
The available lists are:
LAWSTUDENTS (This list is for all law students)
1L (This list is for 1st year law students only)
2-3-4L (This list is for upper division law students only)

Posting to a List:

To post to the list, simply send an email to the list from the account you are subscribed with (your .stu email). The email address to send to follows a simple formula – listname@listserv@okcu.edu . For example, to post to the 1L list, simply send an email message to 1L@listserv.okcu.edu .

Deleting a Subscription

To remove your membership from a particular list, simply send an email to Listserv@listserv.okcu.edu with the command “signoff <insert listname here>” in the message body. For example, if you want to remove yourself from the 1L list I would type “signoff 1L” (without the quotes – See Figure 4).

You will receive an acknowledgment email confirming you have deleted your membership

On-Line Classifieds

An area exists on Starport, the campus portal site (http://starport.okcu.edu), for the sale/donation of items or services, rental announcements, pet adoptions, etc. To view the listings or post an item or service, click the Classifieds Ads link midway down the left hand column of the Starport Home Page. You must login using your username and password in order to post ads.
