Background:
Robert Ravitz practices in the area of criminal law. A 1976 graduate of the School of Law, Ravitz is the Public Defender of Oklahoma County, a position he has held since 1987. In 1996, Ravitz argued and won the case of Cooper v. Oklahoma before the United States Supreme Court, a decision in which the Court unanimously held unconstitutional the state standard for determining competency to stand trial. He was subsequently awarded the Oklahoma Criminal Defense Lawyers Association Clarence Darrow Award for his handling of the case. Ravitz is a frequent lecturer on criminal law and sentencing to bar, civic and educational organizations. He is chairman of the Oklahoma Board of Juvenile Affairs and has been president or a board member of numerous bar and civic organizations.
