Background:

Professor O’Shea’s current research deals with formalist theories of legal interpretation such as textualism and originalism in their application to state courts.  He also has interests in cost-benefit analysis, the law of expert testimony, and firearms law.  (He is sure that these seemingly disparate subjects actually form a seamless intellectual whole, but would prefer to explain just how at some other time.)

Before coming to OCU in 2006, O’Shea practiced commercial litigation with Lathrop & Gage, L.C., in his hometown of Kansas City, Missouri, and with Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw LLP in Chicago.  He also served as a law clerk to Chief Judge Danny J. Boggs of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and to Judge John R. Gibson of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit.

His non-law interests include history of philosophy, religion, poetry, and the fortunes of the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals.
