Access Policy and User Guides - back to top

The OCU Law Library is available for use by the faculty, staff, and students of OCU and OCU Law School.  OCU Law Alumni and members of the Oklahoma Bar Association (OBA) may also register to use the library free of charge using their OBA Card.  Members of the public may also use the Law Library.  However, public patrons are not able to checkout materials for use outside the library.  Additional details on the resources and services available at the OCU Law Library are available in the Library Guides linked below.  In all cases, use of the facilities and resources of the OCU Law Library are subject to compliance with the rules of the Law Library.

Rules - back to top

  1. For the health of our students, faculty, staff, and anyone who visits our campus, no tobacco use of any kind is permitted inside or outside our buildings anywhere on the OCU campus.
  2. The 3 South wing is a "Silent Study Wing." No conversation, not even whispering is permitted. Laptops and other devices must be set to mute, only keyboard noise is acceptable. The library staff will ask noisemakers to move to another location.
  3. Several wings are designated as "Quiet Study Wings." Conversation is to be minimal. Laptops and other devices must be set to mute, only keyboard noise is acceptable. These wings include LL North, 1 South, 2 North, and 3 North. Groups who wish to study together should use a study room. Study rooms are available on a first-come, first-serve basis except during the exam period when a reservation policy may be in effect.
  4. Cell phones and other devices must be turned off or switched to noiseless notification (vibration) while in the library. Please use cell phones only in the lobby areas of the lower level, first and second floors. Cell phones are not permitted in the wings or the third floor lobby area.
  5. Drinks are only permitted in containers with lids. No outside food is allowed in the study wings, study rooms, and lobby areas of the law library; however, outside food may be consumed in the student lounge area on the lower level. Food from the vending machines may be eaten in the lower level student lounge, lower level lobby, and second floor lounge area only. Do not have food delivered in the building. If you are making a delivery order, you must wait outside the entrance for it to be delivered.
  6. Removing materials from the law library without first checking them out, hiding, mutilating materials, or otherwise depriving others of their use is grounds for disciplinary action under the Student Conduct Code, Article 2.01(g) and/or CRIMINAL PROSECUTION under 21 O.S. Sec. 1739. Students found guilty of honor code violations may be subject to expulsion from the Law School.
  7. These rules are subject to change.

Exam Period Reserved Study Room Policy - back to top

During the exam reading period for Fall Semester 2008, the Exam/Reading Period Reserved Study Room Policy will be in effect.  This Reserved Study Room Policy will be in effect ONLY during the exam/reading period at the end of each semester, when the Law Library will be open for extended hours.  (This policy does not apply during the rest of each semester.)

The Law Library has eight study rooms; under this policy five of these rooms will be made available only by reservation, and only to groups of two or more law students; the other three rooms will continue to be available on a first-come first-served basis to individuals as well as groups.

For ALL Study Rooms:  Only law students may use our study rooms.

Reserved Rooms:  Five rooms will be available only to groups of two or more law students, by reservation only, under this policy:  the three study rooms on LL-South, the study room in LL-Lobby (used otherwise as the Law Review Office), and the study room in the 2nd Floor Lobby.  These rooms will be available only for group study and they must be reserved in advance at the Circulation Desk, in person or by phone.  Groups with reservations may have library staff ask those without reservations to vacate these rooms.

Non-Reserved Rooms:  Three rooms will remain available to individual law students or groups, without reservations (first come, first served), under this policy:  the three study rooms on LL-North.  Reservations will not be needed or accepted for these three rooms, and individual law students will be on an equal footing with groups in claiming them – first come, first served – as is our policy the rest of the year.

Rules:

  1. Reservations must be made in person at the Circulation Desk or by phone.
  2. There must be a minimum of two students in a group to reserve a room.
  3. All members of a group must be listed on each reservation.
  4. Larger groups do not get preference over smaller groups in reserving rooms; the group that makes the reservation first for a given day and time gets the room.
  5. Reservations can be made up to the last minute as long as a room is available (not already reserved), but we recommend that reservations be made at least 24 hours in advance, to ensure that a room will be available.
  6. Reservations can be made up to – but not more than – one week in advance of the time of use.
  7. Study room reservations will be forfeited if the group is more than 10 minutes late to claim the room for a reserved time and there are other students waiting to reserve and use the room.
  8. The maximum reserved time allowed per group, is 4 hours a day; but if a room is not reserved by others after a group’s reservation has ended, that group may continue to use the room until the time for another reservation for that room begins.
  9. The same room may not be reserved for the same time slot by the same group for more than 2 days in a row.
  10. Reservations for study rooms may not be tampered with, and signs identifying our reserved study rooms should not be removed.

Interlibrary Loan - back to top

Materials not available in the Law Library or the Dulaney-Browne (University) Library may be requested through interlibrary loan (ILL).  This service is limited to OCU LAW faculty, staff, students, and alumni.  Whether to fill the request is the decision of the lending library.  Filled requests are usually received within three weeks.  Patrons may generally keep the materials for thirty days and make one renewal request.  There is generally no charge unless special material or handling is required.   Patrons should always check the OCU Library Catalog and Library Databases to see if the item is already available on campus before making an interlibrary loan request.  Use this link to access instructions on how to submit a Interlibrary loan electronically.  It is a violation of copyright law for a patron to request more than four articles from the same journal.

Making Requests

Eligible patrons may submit requests using either the paper form available from the Circulation Desk or online using the WorldCat database.  WorldCat searches library catalogs around the world for materials.  It is accessible from the Law Library's Databases Page.  Once you have located material in WorldCat, click the interlibrary loan symbol , complete the form and submit it.

Contacts

Reference librarians can assist you in making and monitoring interlibrary loan requests.  Contact Darla Jackson (405) 208-5915 or Karen Kalnins (405) 208-5174 for more information.
