Access Policy and User Guides - back to top
The OCU Law Library is available for use by the faculty, staff, and students of OCU and OCU Law School. OCU Law Alumni and members of the Oklahoma Bar Association (OBA) may also register to use the library free of charge using their OBA Card. Members of the public may also use the Law Library. However, public patrons are not able to checkout materials for use outside the library. Additional details on the resources and services available at the OCU Law Library are available in the Library Guides linked below. In all cases, use of the facilities and resources of the OCU Law Library are subject to compliance with the rules of the Law Library.
Rules - back to top
Several wings are designated as “Quiet Study Wings.” Conversation is to be minimal and computers are to be silenced. These wings include LL North, 1 South, 2 North, and 3 North. Groups who wish to study together should use a study room. Study rooms are available on a first-come, first-serve basis except during the exam period when a reservation policy may be in effect.
Cell phones and pagers must be turned off or switched to noiseless notification (vibration) while in the library. Please use cell phones only in the lobby areas of the lower level, first and second floors. Cell phones are not permitted in the wings or the third floor lobby area.
Exam Period Reserved Study Room Policy - back to top
From Saturday, November 25th through Friday, December 15th, during the exam reading period for Fall Semester 2006, the Exam/Reading Period Reserved Study Room Policy will be in effect. This Reserved Study Room Policy will be in effect ONLY during the exam/reading period at the end of each semester, when the Law Library will be open for extended hours. (This policy does not apply during the rest of each semester.)
The Law Library has eight study rooms; under this policy five of these rooms will be made available only by reservation, and only to groups of two or more law students; the other three rooms will continue to be available on a first-come first-served basis to individuals as well as groups.
For ALL Study Rooms: Only law students may use our study rooms.
Reserved Rooms: Five rooms will be available only to groups of two or more law students, by reservation only, under this policy: the three study rooms on LL-South, the study room in LL-Lobby (used otherwise as the Law Review Office), and the study room in the 2nd Floor Lobby. These rooms will be available only for group study and they must be reserved in advance at the Circulation Desk, in person or by phone. Groups with reservations may have library staff ask those without reservations to vacate these rooms.
Non-Reserved Rooms: Three rooms will remain available to individual law students or groups, without reservations (first come, first served), under this policy: the three study rooms on LL-North. Reservations will not be needed or accepted for these three rooms, and individual law students will be on an equal footing with groups in claiming them – first come, first served – as is our policy the rest of the year.
Rules:
Interlibrary Loan - back to top
Materials not available in the Law Library or the Dulaney-Browne (University) Library may be requested through interlibrary loan (ILL). This service is limited to OCU LAW faculty, staff, students, and alumni. Whether to fill the request is the decision of the lending library. Filled requests are usually received within three weeks. Patrons may generally keep the materials for thirty days and make one renewal request. There is generally no charge unless special material or handling is required. Patrons should always check the OCU Library Catalog and Library Databases to see if the item is already available on campus before making an interlibrary loan request. Use this link to access instructions on how to submit a Interlibrary loan electronically. It is a violation of copyright law for a patron to request more than four articles from the same journal.
Making Requests
Eligible patrons may submit requests using either the paper form available from the Circulation Desk or online using the WorldCat database. WorldCat searches library catalogs around the world for materials. It is accessible from the Law Library's Databases Page. Once you have located material in WorldCat, click the interlibrary loan symbol
, complete the form and submit it.
Contacts
Reference librarians can assist you in making and monitoring interlibrary loan requests. Contact Darla Jackson (405) 208-5915 or Karen Kalnins (405) 208-5174 for more information.

Foreign Law Guide Available Electronically
The Law Library has purchased online access to Reynolds & Flores Foreign Law Guide: Current Sources of Codes and Basic Legislation in Jurisdictions of the World. If you are looking for foreign law in English this resource is essential. Foreign Law Guide covers almost every jurisdiction in the world. For each jurisdiction it provides a summary of their legal system, a description of primary and secondary sources, links to sources available online, and lists major laws by subject. This is an indispensable resource for foreign law research. Please note that the print version of Foreign Law Guide available in the Reference Wing will no longer be updated.
OCU Law Library HandHeld Resources
If you use a web enabled Smartphone, PDA, or HandHeld device be sure to check out the new OCU Law Library HandHeld Resources page. It features a version of the Law Library catalog optimized for viewing on handheld devices and links to Westlaw Wireless and other useful information and links for HandHeld users.
Audio Case Files contains downloadable audio files of court opinions and podcasts from law professors and law students. The website contains cases from 1L classes along with some 2L and 3L subjects.
To register: go to www.audiocasefiles.com and click “register.” Input your student information and law school provided email address. Registration is available to current OCU Law students and faculty only.
Karen Kalnins, Reference Librarian, joined the OCU Law Library Staff on July 1, 2007. You may contact Karen by email by clicking on the link or by phone at 208-5174. To learn more about Karen you may visit the OCU Law Library Staff page at OCU Law - K. Kalnins.

Taught by Lee Peoples, this session will not be a repeat of any summer associate training offered by LexisNexis or Westlaw but instead will focus on strategies and sources to make life easier this summer in any job involving legal research. Form Books, Pattern Discovery and Deposition Questions, Practice Guides, Treatises, Looseleafs, and other valuable Practitioner Resources will be discussed.
Laptop Security Anchor Points and Locks
In response to student requests we have installed laptop anchor points throughout the law library. You will find these in every study room and at various tables and carrels in each wing of the law library. To use the anchor points follow these steps:

1. Pass the loop end of the cable lock through the anchor point.

2. Pass the lock end of the cable lock through the loop end of the cable lock.

3. Secure the lock end to your laptop's security slot by pushing in the button on the back of the lock. Most laptops have security slots.
The cable lock needed to secure your laptop to the anchor point is inexpensive (around $25) and can be purchased at many local stores (Best Buy, Wal Mart etc …). The law library has several cable locks available for checkout from the circulation desk. These are available for use inside the law library only.
It is never a good idea to leave valuables unattended in the law library. Anchor points and cable locks are not a 100% guarantee against theft but they make it much more difficult for a thief to make off with your computer. Several laptops were stolen last year from the computer lab. In an informal survey conducted last week library staff counted 41 unlocked and unattended laptops at different times in the law library. Hopefully, these anchor points and laptop locks will help prevent future thefts.
RIA Academic Advantage Library - The RIA's Checkpoint Tax Research Platform is now available to conduct electronic research. Access the service on campus at http://checkpoint.riag.com/login?iploc=okmacityunty. Access to the service may also be accomplished by visiting the Law Library's Databases Page and clicking on the RIA link.
The Law Library is continuously adding new titles to the collection. A list of new titles can be obtained using the library catalog. Additionally, a select collection of the newly acquired titles are on display in the Reference Wing.
New copiers were recently installed in the Law Library on the 1 North Wing (B&W) and 1 South Wing (B&W & Color). If you have an old copy card, this card will no longer work. OCU “smartchip” IDs will work. Students receive a $40 per semester credit for copies. Before using your OCU ID to make copies you must have your card validated at the circulation desk. Both copiers also take change.
Flash drives available for checkout
Three new flash drives are now available for checkout at the Circulation Desk. Consistent with copyright laws, the drives may be used to download materials, which can then be electronically forwarded to personal email accounts. Additionally, patrons may use the drives to save microform materials that have been electronically reproduced using the new Minolta Microform Reader/Scanner.
