Martin Luther King Celebration
Tuesday, January 22, 6:30pm
Bishop W. Angie Smith Chapel
I invite each of you to attend our own Oklahoma City University Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., celebration program. On Tuesday, January 22, 2008, at 6:30, our campus will again be a site of celebration for the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This event will be held in the Bishop W. Angie Smith Chapel. Celebrations honoring his life are held all across our nation and our state.
I am not familiar with any that hold their celebration on the day following the national holiday. We do this with purpose and with the hope that each member of our campus community and friends of the university can join us for this very special evening. We are committed to honoring this very special man for his commitment to social justice. Martin Luther King, Jr., saw a world not marred by differences, but one in which differences are celebrated and valued.
We believe that our mission is in concert with his message and celebrate the progress that our University has made. Likewise the attendance, involvement and participation from a variety of campus constituencies has continued to grow and I hope you too will be a part of this event.
This year, we are honored that the Rev. Ernest Jackson, Jr., will be the keynote speaker. Rev. Jackson is the Senior Minister of Christ United Methodist Church and the Administrative Pastor of Shalom Ministries here in Oklahoma City.
In addition to the message from Rev. Jackson, we will be entertained by the University Chamber Choir under the direction of Randi Von Ellefson, the Spirit of Grace Liturgical Dancers, Miss Black Oklahoma, the OCU Rhythms, Mr. OCU International, the Generation Blessed Choir and much, much more.
I encourage each of you to join me, in support of our students and in recognition of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., by attending this celebration.
Sincerely,
Tom J. McDaniel

Oklahoma Lawyers for Children - Lawyer/Law Student Partnership Alliance
Thursday, January 31, 5:00pm - 5:45pm
Sarkeys Law Center Room 104
OCU LAW has had a longstanding relationship with Oklahoma Lawyers for Children (OLFC). Many students have benefitted from past volunteer intake training (NOTE: a volunteer training session will be scheduled in late February or early March) and involvement with OLFC by assisting with intake and processing of cases involving abused or neglected children. This presentation will highlight a new program whereby students can have more direct contact with attorneys as cases proceed through the legal system. Students need not have had the intake training to participate in this new program.
Lynne McGuire, OCU LAW JD95, and President and CEO of OLFC, will present this program. Volunteer attorneys are assigned cases in which they represent abused or neglected children, those least able to speak for themselves. These attorneys are interested in partnering with law students to maximize the quality of the representation afforded these children. OLFC and OCU LAW have developed a new program in which volunteer law students are paired with an attorney to work on these cases. Students will have the opportunity to work one-on-one with an attorney on various aspects of the case, including court appearances, witness interviews, research and writing. Don’t miss the opportunity to hear more information about this exciting new pro bono service opportunity that is open to all law students. Learn how you can develop your legal skills, increase your knowledge of the court system, develop your professional network, receive mentoring from a practicing lawyer, and provide much-needed assistance to children.
Oklahoma Lawyers for Children was co-founded in 1997 by D. Kent Meyers and Don R. Nicholson II, both of whom are attorneys in private practice in Oklahoma City. A judicial order was issued giving OLFC the authority to assist the overburdened public defenders in representing deprived children. These children have been removed from their homes due to neglect or abuse by their parent(s) and/or caretaker. Two additional orders have since been signed expanding the role of OLFC volunteers. Currently OLFC has more than 400 volunteer attorneys, over 150 non-attorney volunteers, as well as legal assistants, mediators, court reporters, private investigators, legal graphic and copy companies, who donate their time, talent, and resources to help abused and neglected children.
This program is co-sponsored by the PCDC and OLFC.

This program is designed for 1L Fulltime and 2L Part-time students wishing to participate in Spring On-Campus Interviews. NOTE: hiring criteria/academic screening vary by employer and geographic area (contact the PCDC for research assistance). The interview slots will be limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. In order to make life easier for our law graduates, we will be holding an event next week that we call “Countdown to Commencement” (CTC). CTC is a two-day event that allows you, at one time, to complete all of the various tasks that must be taken care of prior to your graduation. This is your one and only opportunity to take care of these details early and in an easy three-step process. While you are not required to attend this, I can guarantee that later you will be sorry that you didn’t, so please make time sometime during these two days (approx. 45-60 minutes) to attend.
CTC will be held in Sarkeys, Room 216 and 205, on Tuesday and Wednesday, February 5-6, from 9 a.m.-6 p.m., both days. The February CTC is ONLY for May 2008 graduation candidates, and those August 2008 graduation candidates who will be “walking” in May.
In order to complete the graduation process, you need to take care of the following details (whether at CTC or on your own). If you choose to participate in CTC, you must complete all THREE steps, in order.
STEP 1: Go to ROOM 216 (PCDC office)
Complete the required Professional and Career Development Center interview/employment survey which tracks information for required ABA reports on employment status of our graduates.
STEP 2: Go across the hall to ROOM 215A
Robert Coulthard will be present to provide you with details about his specialized bar review preparation program and other important information. The results of his programs have spoken for themselves after both the February 2007 and July 2007 bar exams.
STEP 3: PROCEED TO ROOM 205 to attend to final graduation details
We strongly encourage you to schedule time to participate in Countdown to Commencement. It is truly the easiest way for you to complete the administrative processes necessary for you to graduate, so mark your calendars! You may pay for announcements, class rings, etc, by cash, check or credit card (VISA and MasterCard only). If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at 208.5355, or at dfathree@okcu.edu.

The 1996 Solomon Amendment provides for the Secretary of Defense to deny federal funding to institutions of higher learning if they prohibit or prevent ROTC or military recruitment on campus. This has brought into question the constitutionality of the legislation. In Rumsfeld v. FAIR, handed down on March 6, 2006, the Supreme Court rejected the arguments of FAIR, SALT and several individual plaintiffs and upheld the constitutionality of the Solomon Amendment. The Supreme Court decided that law schools' and law faculties' First Amendment free speech rights were not violated by the Solomon Amendment because law schools and faculties remain free to voice their opposition to the military's discriminatory "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy as it relates to sexual orientation.
This discussion will provide insight about this issue from the Department of Defense and affected servicemembers’ perspectives. The presenters include Darla Jackson, OCU LAW Library Reference and Access Services Librarian and former military attorney and Emily Hecht, Staff Attorney with the Washington, DC, based group Servicemembers Legal Defense Network.
This law raises many issues, several of which are highly charged. OCU LAW is pleased to present this information and is proud that several disparate student organizations – Lesbian and Gay Law Students Association, American Constitution Society, and the Federalist Society – have combined efforts to offer this program of civil discourse.

This year, as happens at many law schools around the country, the OCU LAW Public Interest Law Group will host an auction to provide even more funding to this important endeavor. Many organizations and individuals are contributing their time, talents, and resources, to this inaugural program including an OCU LAW graduate who is a professional auctioneer.

Oklahoma Lawyers for Children Shelter Volunteer Training
Saturday, March 8, 8:30am - 3:00pm
Sarkeys Law Center Room 114
To date OLFC volunteers have represented more than 2,666 children in Oklahoma County. The Courts and DHS have recently asked OLFC to assist children in Canadian and Cleveland Counties also. Many OCU law students and their family members have volunteered in this important program.

All interested students, but especially second-year full-time and third-year part time students (as the timeline to apply for these positions involves preparations during the last summer of law school), are encouraged to attend the following program.
Securing a federal judicial clerkship can have a significant and lasting impact upon one's career. This presentation will offer the perspective of one of OCU LAW's recent graduates, Tynan Grayson. Current students wishing to know how their career paths can be positively influenced by such an experience are encouraged to attend this session. In addition to hearing about what a federal judicial clerk does, participants will learn from the PCDC staff about the logistics for applying to these positions.
Tynan Grayson is an associate with Crowe & Dunlevy in Oklahoma City. Her practice focuses on business and commercial litigation and appellate law. She is admitted to practice in the U.S. District Courts for the Western, Eastern, and Northern Districts of Oklahoma and in all Oklahoma state courts.
Ms. Grayson graduated magna cum laude from the Oklahoma City University School of Law in 2005, and, upon graduating, was voted most likely to succeed by OCU faculty. While in law school, Ms. Grayson was a member of the Jessup International Moot Court Team, served as president and treasurer of the National Women Law Students' Association, as vice-president of the Black Law Students' Association, and as an Oklahoma Lawyers for Children volunteer. She was on the Faculty Honor Roll and earned the CALI Award for Excellence in Contracts I, Contracts II, Antitrust Law, Advanced Legal Research (Foreign, International and Comparative Law), Advanced Legal Research (U.S. Law), and Trademark and Unfair Competition Law.
Before attending law school, Ms. Grayson earned a master’s degree in computer science from Oklahoma State University and a bachelor’s degree, summa cum laude, in computer science from Langston University. Her master's thesis, “A Web Information Organization and Management System (WIOMS),” was published in proceedings of the 16th ACM SAC2001 Symposium in 2001.
Prior to joining Crowe & Dunlevy, Ms. Grayson served as law clerk to the Honorable Vicki Miles-LaGrange of the United States District Court for the Western District of Oklahoma.
Ms. Grayson currently serves as secretary of the Federal Bar Association and on the Oklahoma Bar Association's Women in Law Committee. In addition, Ms. Grayson is an Oklahoma Bar Foundation Fellow and serves on the Oklahoma City Philharmonic Associate Board and the Oklahoma City University School of Law Executive Board.

Do you have a plan to create financial security for yourself? If you answered no, you are not alone. Please consider, though, as you make plans to identify and develop your career goals, an important component that is often overlooked is simple planning for outcomes that will create financial security. Many students put this off because they are focused on their studies and do not want to think about their student loans and how they will pay them back. Denial will not help. This program is designed to give students basic steps they can begin taking now to address financial goals and concerns.
A licensed financial advisor will present this program.

Culture Clash and the Rule of Law in Global Trade

OCU Law Professor Phyllis E. Bernard, M.A., J.D.
Today’s savvy business executives and attorneys recognize that global trade has worked its way to the mainstream of America’s economy. (A quick illustration: walk through Wal Mart and identify how many products are made – or even grown – in America.) Prof. Bernard explains how tribal peacemaking methods developed at OCU School of Law have been adapted for use by the State Department and American Bar Association in several African nations. Her talk previews the next generation of dispute prevention and resolution involving volatile populations. The challenge is to introduce standardized law and business ethics in areas of the globe where clashes of culture can quickly ignite regional or international conflicts, disrupting supply chains vital to trade and peace.
Phyllis E. Bernard is a professor of law at Oklahoma City University School of Law, where she is the founding director of the Center on Alternative Dispute Resolution. She currently serves as the senior fellow for peace and non-violence for the Oikos Institute at OCU. For a decade, Prof. Bernard directed the Oklahoma Supreme Court’s Early Settlement Central Mediation Program.
This lecture is part of Intersections, a multidisciplinary program that focuses annually on different areas of the world for the purpose of enriching lives, sharing experiences, and fostering understanding across cultures. For more information see www.okcu.edu/intersections or call 208-5270.
Friday, March 28, 5:30pm - 7:00pm
Bricktown Brewery
As most law students will end up working for small to medium-sized employers, it is critical that they know how the hiring game works. Believing that there is a standard, routine practice these employers engage in each year is a deadly assumption. These types of employers do not have routine hiring practices and many of them make decisions to hire when they are not actively seeking a new employee. How does this happen? Through various types of interactions and the building of familiarity and relationships. This program is designed to simulate an interaction many students will encounter in a public setting and will utilize a technique that has become popular of late -- speed interviewing with practicing attorneys.
The event costs $5 to participate and is open to any interested law student. It will be held at the Bricktown Brewery on Friday, March 28, 2008, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Light hors d'ourves will be served. Advance registration through Symplicity is required. Register soon as space is limited.
Further details on the process will be provided to confirmed registrants. Questions should be directed to Dean Rowsam or one of the 1L Class Officers.

OCU LAW Small Employer Career Fair
Wednesday, April 2, 3:00pm - 6:00pm

Representatives from small legal employers will be on hand to visit with students about the reality of obtaining positions with these firms. Statistics bear out every year that most law graduates end up with small to medium sized employers. Because these employers do not engage in routine hiring practices, such as on-campus interviewing, it is critical that students understand how to obtain the attention of this segment of the legal market.
