The Right Honorable Lord Justice Scott Baker to Speak at Oklahoma City University School of Law
OKLAHOMA CITY – The Honorable Mr. Justice Scott Baker, Lord Justice of Appeal, Royal Courts of Justice Court of Appeal and Master Treasurer, Middle Temple Inn, will speak at Oklahoma City University School of Law (OCU LAW) at 5 p.m. Oct. 24 in the Homsey Family Moot Courtroom, Sarkeys Law Center, at the corner of NW 23rd Street and Kentucky Ave. The lecture is free to the public.
“Current Issues Troubling the English Courts, including Human Rights and Terrorism” is the title of his talk.
"American and British courts have always had much in common," said OCU LAW Dean Lawrence K. Hellman. "This is especially true today. Now that both England and the United States have been shocked by unprecedented acts of terrorism, courts on both sides of the Atlantic are struggling to find the appropriate balance between preserving human rights and authorizing government efforts to combat terrorism. With significant new antiterrorism legislation under consideration in London, Lord Justice Scott Baker’s address promises to be particularly timely."
Lord Justice Scott Baker has been a British High Court Judge since 1988 and was elevated to the Supreme Court of Judicature Court of Appeal in 2002. In this capacity, he has jurisdiction over every aspect of law, civil and criminal. He has ruled in numerous noteworthy cases, including a case earlier this year that required a British school to allow a Muslim student to wear a religious dress despite the terms of the school’s dress code.
Lord Justice Scott Baker’s appearance at OCU LAW is in conjunction with his visit to Oklahoma jointly sponsored by the William J. Holloway Jr. and Ruth Bader Ginsburg American Inns of Court and Oklahoma City University School of Law. In addition to his public lecture, the visiting jurist’s day at OCU will include participation in two classes and workshop with law faculty.
