Books


Searching by subject in the online catalog is one of the best ways to find books on history in the library’s collection. One of the most common forms of subject heading is “[Name of country]—History.” This search will allow you to browse through related headings by topic and period. For example:


United States—History [type in search-box: “united states history”]

China—History

France—History

Great Britain—History

South Africa—History


History subject headings in the catalog may also be differentiated by period:


United States—History—Civil War, 1861-1865

Brazil—History—1549-1762


You may also search for individual events and topics in Subject:


France—History—Revolution, 1789-1799

Women—United States—History—20th century


Most history books in Dulaney-Browne Library are found in the call numbers 900 through 999 in the reference area on the first floor and on the fourth floor. Some are electronic books available online through ebrary. To find books in other libraries and obtain them through interlibrary loan, try WorldCat.



Journal Articles and Book Reviews


JSTOR and Academic Search Premier (EBSCOhost) are two of best databases for finding articles and book reviews in history. See also the Directory of Open Access Journals for more online articles. Please note that the Dulaney-Browne Library may have some years of its history journals in the databases, in print on the shelves, and/or in microfiche. Some major history journals include:
