MLA WITH EMPHASIS IN LITERATURE

Track Requirements*:
A minimum of 6 graduate level courses in Literature (18 hrs)
MLA 6003 Liberal Arts in Western Culture (3 hrs)
MLA electives (15 hrs)

A total of 36 graduate hours is required for the degree.

Comprehensive Examination or Thesis: MLA Literature students are required to complete one of the following requirements.

A. Pass a comprehensive examination over a reading list designed by the student's examination committee. See the Literature Track Coordinator for guidelines regarding the examination. The reading list can be arranged such that many of the works on it will be taught in courses during the student's graduate career.

Or:

B. Complete a master's thesis. You may earn up to six hours of graduate credit for writing a thesis. A thesis may be used as the final project for students who plan to pursue formal academic writing after graduation. See the Literature Track Coordinator for official guidelines for this option.

Outside Electives: Up to 6 hours of graduate course work may be taken outside the MLA program (e.g., MBA, MED, MACP, MCJA, MPA, etc.) with the approval of the MLA Director. These elective courses normally replace hours from the elective MLA courses.

Independent Study: Up to 6 hours of graduate course work may be taken through independent study, with the approval of the MLA Director. See the MLA Director for the official guidelines.

*Since flexibility is an important goal of the MLA Program, the Track Coordinator can recommend, on behalf of students who have compelling academic reasons, an alteration an the normal plan of study. MLA Literature Students may also satisfy literature requirements by taking certain courses in the MLA Writing Track. Interested students should consult with the Track Coordinator.
