Track Requirements:
At least 6 courses of graduate level Philosophy (18 hours)
(including one of the History of Philosophy courses)
Liberal Arts electives (15 hours)
The Liberal Arts in Western Culture (3 hours)

A total of 36 graduate hours is required for the degree.

Required Courses: All MLA Philosophy students are required to take MLA 6003 Liberal Arts in Western Culture, and at least one of the following courses:

MLAP 5113 - History of Philosophy I (Ancient and Medieval)
MLAP 5213 - History of Philosophy II (Modem Philosophy)
MLAP 5313 - History of Philosophy III (19th & 20th Centuries)

Comprehensive Examination or Thesis:

A. Pass a comprehensive examination over a fixed reading list of books in the history of philosophy. See the Philosophy Track Coordinator for the guidelines regarding the examination and a copy of the reading list. Many books on the reading list will be taught in courses during the student's graduate career.

Or:

B. Complete a thesis. The MLA Program sometimes allows students to write a thesis in their given tracks when there is a good academic reason to do so. This is an optional way of earning six hours of credit towards the degree, and is done in lieu of the six hours of independent study. See the MLA Track Coordinator for the official guidelines, and the limitations of this option.

Outside Electives: Up to 6 hours of graduate coursework may be taken outside the MLA program (e.g., MBA, MED, MACP, MCJA, MPA, etc.) with the approval of the MLA Director. These elective courses normally replace hours from the regular MLA side of the ledger.

Independent Study: Up to 6 hours of graduate coursework may be taken through independent study, with the approval of the MLA Director. See the MLA Director for the official guidelines.

Optional Courses: MLA Philosophy students may complete their tracks by taking courses from the following list:

MLAP 5163 - Seminar in Philosophy and Theology (may be retaken when course content changes).

Topics include: Process Philosophy and Theology, Liberation Theology, Personalism, Religious Pluralism, and figures such as Whitehead, Niebuhr, Bultmann, Tillich, Kierkegaard, Wesley, etc.

MLAP 5313 - Contemporary Political Theory

MLAP 5563 - Advanced Topics in Philosophy (may be retaken when course content changes).

MLAP 5613 - Critical Issues in Christian Ethics (may be retaken when course content changes).
