MIDDLE SCHOOL MUSICAL THEATER CLASS COMES TO THE ACADEMY

Starting in January 2008, OCU’S Performing Arts Academy is pleased to introduce the “Spotlight Youth Theater” musical theater training program.

Admission is open to current 5th through 8th grade students who have an interest in musical theater performance. Under the direction of former Plano Children’s Theater director Marcelle Hamilton, the class will combine theater training along with on-stage performance opportunities. Marcelle directed over 70 shows for Plano Children’s Theater and is excited to be a part of Oklahoma City University. The course will culminate in a production of the legendary musical “Bye, Bye Birdie.”

There are no admission requirements to enroll, but students must audition for roles in the show. Auditions will take place Saturday, January 12th from 10 AM – 12 Noon at OCU. “In musical theater, there is room for every level of talent – from leads to ensemble. Students get to learn all the skills no matter what level they are,” says Marcelle. “This age range is my passion as students are just starting to develop their love for musical theater!”

The program will meet each Mondays from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM where students will work on staging “Birdie.” “What I have learned after eight years in children’s theater is that the best teaching comes when you don’t even know you are learning,” says Marcelle. Besides staging the show, students will also participate in theater and improv games. “It’s amazing what students can learn in just two hours!”

The Spotlight Youth Theater audition requirements are a one minute monologue (from a play or musical) and a one minute song (it may be from a musical or other source). The auditions will be held in a friendly and supportative environment. Those with little or no theatrical background are welcome to apply.

Cost for the class is $300. To apply for the OCU Spotlight Youth Theater, please call (405) 208-5410 or email JoBeth Moad, Academy Director, at jmoad@okcu.edu. Click here to fill out an Audtion Form >>

SPOTLIGHT ON SUMMER TRAINING
Oklahoma City University's Summer Musical Theatre Program
Oklahoma City, Okla.

"Our summer program is for high school students who think they'll want to have careers in musical theatre," explains JoBeth Moad, director of the Performing Arts Academy at Oklahoma City University. "We offer intensive pre-college training in voice, acting, and dance. Since we're training for musical theatre, we don't emphasize one discipline over the other. One of our goals is to help kids determine if musical theatre is what they want to pursue professionally or even on the college level. They leave the program saying, 'I love this. This is for me,' or 'It's not for me.' Whatever the kids decide, they've had a wonderful time."......
