PRIVATE INSTRUCTION

Over 300 music students come to the Performing Arts Academy each week to explore their musical ambitions. Under the guidance of our degreed and caring faculty, our students’ talents are nurtured in a creative and safe environment. When a student enrolls with the Performing Arts Academy, they receive more than just private lessons. They receive:

  • instruction by an Academy faculty instructor who helps meet their musical needs and desires
  • an opportunity to perform in our monthly “First Saturday” recital series
  • an opportunity to attend special Academy recitals, master classes and workshops
  • a warm and friendly environment inside one of that nation’s most respected music schools

  • The Performing Arts Academy offers private instruction in:

    Voice
The Academy teaches a classical voice technique. Instructors work on breathing, posture, placement, developing a pleasing tone, scales, diction and repertoire. Students will study age and ability appropriate music in classical, folk and music theater repertoire.

    Piano
For students of all levels, instructors work on basic keyboard skills (scales, chords, rhythm), sight reading and basic music theory. Instructors tailor a program to each student’s needs whether they are a young or adult beginner or preparing to study music in college.

    Strings
Includes violin, cello, harp, viola and guitar. The focus is classical technique, scales, finger positions and repertoire. Violin, viola and cello students may audition to join our chamber orchestra, Academy Sinfonia. Harp students must have prerequisite study in piano. Our classical guitar program also includes group “jam” sessions.

    Brass
Instruction in trumpet, trombone, horn, tuba and euphonium includes scales, breathing exercises, technique and finger positioning.

    Percussion
Instruction includes rhythm, sight-reading and basic music theory for traditional percussion instruments and drum set.

    Suzuki Guitar & Violin
The Suzuki Method began in Japan as a teaching method that allows children to play an instrument before they are able to read. Instruction is based on listening and imitation and involves the parent as teacher at home. Study includes a weekly private lesson as well as frequent group classes.

    Kindermusik
    Starting January 2008
The OCU Performing Arts Academy is pleased to be one of the few Oklahoma locations to present this internationally renowned child development program. Weekly classes with our certified teacher allow student from birth to age seven to develop their reasoning and motor skills through a series of music games and activities. Parents participate in class along with their children and share the learning experience.

Spotlight Youth Theater (middle school musical theater class)
    Starting January 2008
The Academy's Spotlight Youth Theater allows middle school students (5th - 8th grade) to train and develop their performing skills. The class meets once a week where students will learn theater games, acting techniques, and movement while working on a fully staged musical.
