VOCAL ARTS INSTITUTE
June 28 - July 12 Cost: $1,960 (Includes tuition, room & board)
Key Faculty: Frank Ragsdale, Program Director William Christensen, Voice
It not only takes natural talent, but technical skill and dedication to make it in the demanding world of classical vocal performance. Oklahoma City University is world-renowned for its demanding and professional vocal training, producing award-winning vocalists and Metropolitan Opera legends such as Leona Mitchell, Chris Merrit, Marqueita Lister and Sarah Coburn.
The Vocal Arts Institute is designed to nurture and encourage those who wish to study the art and technique of classical songs and arias. This classically based program focuses on the young singer who wishes to pursue a career in classical voice or a student who wishes to develop their classical technique and skills.
This two-week residency program is open to high school and undergraduate college students. Admission is based on a successful live audition or audition submission. The demanding curriculum examines classical technique, breathing, diction, foreign language and solo repertoire. Studying with the acclaimed faculty of OCU’s Bass School of Music, students spend mornings and afternoons studying music theory, sight reading, piano, diction, foreign language, vocal technique, vocal pedagogy, acting, movement and opera history. Nights are for rehearsal of our final presentation of art songs and operatic scenes.
Each student receives private voice lessons and will also do ensemble work through scene study. Public performances and recitals add to each student’s experience. The program will culminate with a final performance.
Audition submission required for admission. Click here for audition requirements
