Erik Heine
Associate Professor of Music Theory
Dr. Erik Heine, a scholar of cinematic scores, has been appointed Assistant Professor of Music Theory at the Wanda L. Bass School of Music.

His dissertation, The Music of Dmitri Shostakovich in “The Gadfly,” “Hamlet,” and “King Lear,” analyzes the cues composed for the three films, both independently and as they contribute to each film's narrative structure. Other interests include the film scores of Ralph Vaughan Williams, twentieth-century Russian music, and analysis of popular music.

Dr. Heine will teach Theory/Aural Skills and Form & Analysis at the Bass School. "I'm looking forward to working with highly motivated students. OCU is known both in the community and around the country for producing outstanding musicians and I am excited to contribute to that process."

He earned a B.M. in Percussion Performance from Illinois Wesleyan University, an M.M. in Music Theory from the University of Arizona, and a Ph.D. in Music Theory from the University of Texas at Austin. His teachers have included Tim Kolosick, Jim Buhler, Ed Pearsall, and David Neumeyer.

He has been awarded grants for research at The British Library in London, England. Some of his findings were presented at the 2005 College Music Society South Central Chapter Annual Meeting. He has been selected to present his work at “Shostakovich: Centenary Reflections,” an international conference sponsored by the United Kingdom Shostakovich Society, to be held in Cambridge, Sept. 15-17, 2006.

"I am thrilled to get into the classroom and train and get to know my students," he said. "They will leave my class with a greater understanding of how music works."
