Jerod Sheffer Tate (Chickasaw name: Taloa Ikbi) was born in 1968 in Norman, Oklahoma. He received his B.M. in Piano Performance from Northwestern University, where he studied with Dr. Donald J. Isaak, and his MM in Piano Performance and Composition at The Cleveland Institute of Music, where he studied with Elizabeth Parson and Dr. Donald Erb.
His "Winter Moons" ballet score was commissioned by Dr. Patricia Tate, premiered at the University of Wyoming in 1992, and performed by the Colorado Ballet in 1994 and 1996. The "Winter Moons Concert Suite" was performed by the Colorado, Minneosta, and Billings Symphony Orchestras. "lyaaknasha' for Double Bass and Orchestra" was commissioned by James VanDemark of the Eastman School of Music, premiered in 1993 with the Ohio Chamber Orchestra, and recorded by the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Timothy Russell and available on d'Note Classics.
Mr. Tate was the composer for the Native American Television, Inc. in
Minneapolis for the series entitled "First Americans Journal." In 1995, he was guest composer for the Billings Symphony and toured as keyboardist with national tours of "Miss Saigon" and "Les Miserables." In 1997, he was selected as Composer In Residence for the Kennedy Center for the
Performing Arts/National Symphony Orchestra American Residency Program in the State of Wyoming.
Other commissions include the Native Earth Performing Arts Society in Toronto; Christine Bailey, principal flutist of the Buffalo Philharmonic; and the Dale Warland Singers in Minneapolis. He and his wife live in Longmont, Colorado.
