OKLAHOMA CITY – Christmas came a few months early for Oklahoma City University dance graduates Richard Yoder, Taryn Molnar and Sara Edwards. Each recently learned they earned a spot on Broadway in “Irving Berlin’s White Christmas.”
Opening Nov. 13 at the Marquis Theatre, “White Christmas” will spread holiday cheer with 61 performances through Jan. 3. Yoder, Molnar and Edwards have been cast in the dance ensemble.
“Christmas will be busier than usual,” Yoder said. “What I’m most excited about is that my parents will get to see me dance on Broadway. I’m ecstatic.”
Rehearsals begin Oct. 26 and Yoder is looking forward to working again with Molnar and Edwards. Yoder and Molnar are both 2006 graduates of OCU’s Ann Lacy School of American Dance and Arts Management. Edwards is a 2004 graduate of the school.
Molnar said sharing the stage with fellow OCU alumni will be an honor.
“In a career field with so much competition, it’s incredible how often I get to perform with other alums,” she said.
Molnar and Edwards both performed with the St. Paul company of “White Christmas” last year.
“I know I will be completely overwhelmed the first time I step foot on the stage at the Marquis,” she said. “Though I have prepared almost my entire life for this, performing on Broadway is one of theose dreams that is just so huge, I had to be OK with it never happening. I don’t feel like I am at all entitled to this honor, it is simply a blessing that I get to enjoy.”
Molnar said it’s a bonus that she adores the show.
“There are few things in this world that I enjoy more than Christmas, falling snow and tap dancing and ‘White Christmas’ has all three,” she said.
“White Christmas” had a sold-out run on Broadway last year. The stage adaptation of the classic film tells the story of two showbiz buddies who stage a winter show in a picturesque Vermont inn and find their perfect mates in the bargain. The New York Times says “This cozy trip down memory lane should be put on your wish list.”
Just a block up the street at the Palace Theatre, 2005 OCU dance graduate Lauralyn McClelland, 2005 music theater graduate Jennifer Sanchez and 2006 music theater graduate Wes Hart appear in “West Side Story.” Sanchez plays Rosalia, Hart portrays Luis and McClelland is in the ensemble. The show opened in March and will continue indefinitely.
Also currently performing on Broadway are OCU dance alumnae Gabrielle Ruiz and Colette Simmons. Ruiz is in “In the Heights” and Simmons is in “Mama Mia!”
