Choirs from Oklahoma City University’s Bass School of Music will perform a Palm Sunday concert titled “Music of Lamentation and Exultation” at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Bishop W. Angie Smith Chapel, on N.W. 23rd Street between Blackwelder and Kentucky avenues.
The concert, featuring four choirs with approximately 170 singers, is free to the public.
The Ad Astra Women’s Chorus, University Chamber Choir, University Men’s Chorus and the University Singers will perform music by Mendelssohn, Gounod, Robert Ray, Purcell, Hailstork and many other composers. Two larger works for chorus will be performed that enhance the theme of penitence and the Easter celebration, which have inspired composers for centuries.
The “Lamentations of Jeremiah” by Alberto Ginastera will be sung by the University Singers under the direction of Judith Willoughby; and the Chamber Choir, under the direction of Randi Von Ellefson, will perform Benjamin Britten’s “Rejoice in the Lamb” accompanied by university organist Melissa Plamann. Charles Kowloske and John L. Edwards will also accompany various choirs on the piano and organ.
