Oklahoma City University spirit squads will host a variety of events Feb. 2 and 3 including the NAIA Qualifying Competition, intensive master classes, casting call auditions for a talent agency and a STUNT tournament.
NAIA Qualifying Competition
The OCU cheer and pom teams will compete in the NAIA Qualifying Competition at 6 p.m. Feb. 2.
OCU all-girl cheer will compete against Southwestern Christian University and St. Gregory’s University. Large co-ed cheer will compete against Texas Wesleyan and Wayland Baptist. Pom will compete in large dance. Other divisions are small co-ed cheer and small dance.
Admission to watch the competition is $5.
National Dance Association Master Classes
The National Dance Association will give intensive master classes from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 3. Instructors include Keith Green, Meldon Steele and Ally Traylor.
Green has taught hip hop master classes around the country for 14 years and choreographed for MTV’s “My Super Sweet Sixteen” show, the NFL Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders and opening performances for Drake, Ice Cube, Ludacris, Young Joc and many others. Steele is the head choreographer of Legends in Concert, the second-longest running show on the Las Vegas strip. He has also done shows in Spain; Hawaii; Atlantic City, N.J.; Branson, Mo.; and other locations. Traylor recently completed five seasons with the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. She performed live with Enrique Iglesias (featuring Pitbul), Keith Urban, Daughtry, the Jonas Brothers and Kelly Clarkson.
The instructors will teach a hip hop master class, NFL-style jazz, technique and jazz funk. Registration for the master classes is $50; those who attend the NCA/NDA Oklahoma Classic downtown Feb. 2 can take the classes for $40. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. For registration information, contact Holly Kirkpatrick at email@example.com.
Adult and children spectators may watch for a $10 entry and children under 7 are free.
Legends in Concert Auditions
Onstage Entertainment, producers of Legends in Concert, will have auditions for its tribute show beginning at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 3.
The casting call is for:
* Male and female singers who move very well
* Male and female dancers who are proficient in all styles
The producers are casting for the Norwegian Epic cruise ship as well as for their mainstay venues in places like Hawaii, Atlantic City, Branson, Las Vegas and Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Singers should prepare a vocal selection in the genre of rock, pop or R&B. No accompanist will be provided so candidates should bring a CD. All participants will be required to dance first and are encouraged to wear proper dance attire.
For more information contact Meldon Steele at firstname.lastname@example.org.
OCU cheer will be competing in a STUNT tournament against Oklahoma State University and the University of Oklahoma. Games will be at 5, 6 and 7 p.m. Feb. 3.
STUNT is a new competitive team sport derived from cheerleading. STUNT removes the crowd-leading element and focuses on the technical and athletic components of cheer including partner stunts, pyramids, basket tosses, group jumps and tumbling; and a dynamic team performance.
Admission to watch the competition is $5. For more information about the tournament, contact OCU spirit squads coach Brandy Corcoran at BCorcoran@okcu.edu.
