Oklahoma City University has appointed two development directors for its University Advancement & External Relations staff.
Mandy Heaps was promoted from director of annual giving to director of development, and Shawna Garcia was recently hired as director of development.
Heaps graduated from OCU in 2003 with a bachelor’s degree in mass communications and from the University of Oklahoma in 2007 with a master’s degree in journalism and mass communications. She is a member of the Leadership Oklahoma City LOYAL Class III.
Before coming to OCU in 2011, Heaps was the director of development for the Central Oklahoma Humane Society where she was in charge of fundraising, board development, volunteer management, planning special events and other duties. She previously was with the United Way of Central Oklahoma, first as a resource development account executive and then as director of donor relations and leadership giving.
Heaps has been an adjunct professor of public relations at OCU. She is involved with several community organizations including the Junior League of Oklahoma City, Summerstock Productions, Inc., Alpha Phi and the Association for Women in Communication.
Garcia previously was senior corporate market director for the American Heart Association, where she was responsible for meeting a fundraising goal of $1.1 million for the Central Oklahoma Heart Walk. Prior to that position, Garcia was a corporate market director for the organization.
She graduated from Menlo College in Atherton, Calif., with a degree in business management, and earned a liberal arts degree from San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, Calif., where she graduated with honors.
Other development experience includes the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society as a campaign coordinator. She was also a logistics coordinator for C.H. Robinson Worldwide, Inc.
Garcia serves as a youth sports coach for the YMCA. She was team captain of her college soccer team in California and has completed two full marathons, three half marathons, a century bicycle ride as a team-in-training participant. She took fifth place in the Oklahoma City Grand Prix bodybuilding competition.
