OKCMOA Hosts OKCU Short Plays Based on Exhibitions

Playwrights Trya Bullock and Daniel C. Brown

The Oklahoma City Museum of Art’s Art After 5 program March 9 will feature the world premiere of a series of short plays by students in Oklahoma City University’s School of Theatre. The 12 one-minute plays will be performed at 5:30 and again at 7:30 p.m. throughout the museum.

Each of the plays is inspired by a work of art in the permanent collection of OKCMOA. The plays are written, directed and performed by students in the Oklahoma City University School of Theatre devising course.

“In the spirit of ‘Sleep No More,’ the acclaimed re-imagining of ‘Macbeth’ set in a New York City hotel by the UK devising theatre company Punchdrunk, students of the devising course used artworks of the permanent collection to inspire their plays,” said theatre professor Gregory DeCandia. “Twenty-five students will collaborate to make OKCMOA's galleries their stage for a site-specific performance that brings these artworks to life, if only for a moment.”

“We’re thrilled that theater students are finding inspiration for their coursework within our galleries,” said Tracy Truels, OKCMOA director of learning and engagement. “It has been a pleasure working with the students and the university and we are looking forward to seeing the final plays on March 9.”

The plays were selected by Bryon Chambers, OKCMOA manager of tours and adult learning; Kate Brennan, head of voice at the School of Theatre; and Judith Palladino, professor of theatre and theatre for young audiences.

Tickets to Art After 5 are $5 and are available at the door or on the museum’s website. For more information about Art After 5, visit the museum website at okcmoa.com/art-after-5.
