OCU Opera/Music Theater Company presents "The Old Maid and the Thief"

Tuesday, February 27, 2001

The Oklahoma Opera and Music Theater Company will present Gian Carlo Menotti's "The Old Maid and the Thief," March 2 and 3 at 8 p.m. in the Kirkpatrick Fine Arts Center's Margaret E. Petree Recital Hall, 25th and Blackwelder, on the Oklahoma City University campus.

The show is set in a small town, where Miss Todd and her maid Laetita live alone in a modest house and are visited occasionally by Miss Todd's longtime friend, Miss Pinkerton. One day, a beggar named Bob shows up and Miss Todd invites him to stay overnight for some rest and a meal. He accepts. Laetita and Miss Todd are so thrilled to have a man around that they ask him to stay another week. Miss Pinkerton arrives to bring the news that a thief and murderer has just escaped from the county jail. Miss Todd and Laetita, who have kept Bob a secret, suspect he must be the thief. Deciding to harbor him anyway, the women even rob a store and steal from friends to provide Bob money and get him to stay. Is Bob really the thief or just an ordinary man in the wrong place at the wrong time?

On Friday night, Bob will be played by Matthew Udland of Wichita, Kan., and Laetita will be played by Leah Rohrer of Buffalo, Okla. On Saturday night, those roles will be played by Scott Guthrie of Tulsa, Okla., and Jana Roberts of Oklahoma City. The roles of Miss Todd and Miss Pinkerton will be performed both nights by Christen McClure of Tulsa, Okla., and Kris Todd of Oklahoma City.

This production is one of two "Spotlights." Performed as staged readings, the shows are complete with blocking, piano accompaniment, and the flavor of costume and setting. Tickets for the show are $5 for side seats and $10 for center seats.
