Oklahoma's population is just over 3.2 million people and has the largest American Indian population of any state, with just over 250,000. In fact, the name Oklahoma comes from the Choctaw words okla (people) and humma (red), so the state's name literally means red people. Please do not book your flights until you have received your Visa from the US Embassy unless you are purchasing refundable tickets.
Although Residency is three weeks, you do not need to bring enough clothes for three weeks. The hotel has laundry facilities. Plus you may do a lot of shopping and purchase new clothes as many of the previous students have done. :)
You will want to bring clothes that are appropriate for your Management of Personal Lifestyles course, such as tennis shoes, gym clothes and possibly a swim suit. You will be also want tennis shoes for the Environmental Science course due to nature walks.
For the commencement ceremony, it is recommended for students to wear business-casual style clothing under the gowns. Dark shoes are appropriate.
Oklahoma weather can be very inconsistent. A famous Oklahoman Will Rogers said, “If you don’t like the weather in Oklahoma, just wait five minutes.” One day it can be sunny with a high of 65 degrees Fahrenheit and the next day we have freezing weather with four inches of snow on the ground.
If you are coming for Fall Residency, please bring a warm, winter coat and prepare to layer your clothing. It can get very cold in Oklahoma and the wind chill can be hard on those who are not used to it. A warm coat, hat, gloves and scarf are strongly suggested. Many students will buy sweaters or sweatshirts while they are visiting.
If you are coming for the Spring Residency, please bring a jacket, preferably waterproof due to the chance of rain.
