Department of Education
Celebrating 25 Years of Service

EDUCATION - MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the Department of Education at Oklahoma City University is to develop teachers who will be strong leaders with the ability to educate others successfully. The faculty is committed to offering a personalized professional degree that carries a reputation for academic excellence focusing on the knowledge, skills and dispositions to promote the success of each graduate and instill a desire for lifelong learning and service.

In today's world of high technology, human accomplishments are often overshadowed by machines. Discovering the uniqueness of individuals and aspiring and guiding them to their potential are the greatest challenges of the teaching profession. This is the challenge of the future. Accept the challenge!

EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION

The Faculty in the Department of Education is dedicated to excellence. Our programs are designed to actively involve the student in the process of becoming a teacher. Our mission is to prepare teachers who have an appreciation of the individual through an understanding of physical, cognitive, social and emotional development.

Quality learning experiences enable our students to develop self-confidence and excitement about teaching while supporting the greatest personal growth for our future teachers. Each student is personally assisted through the entire program by at least two faculty mentors who advise the student on course selection, school experiences and other issues of importance to the personal and professional growth of the student/teacher.

A STRONG ARTS AND SCIENCE BACKGROUND

A degree in the liberal arts and science is another plus to your education and teaching preparation at Oklahoma City University. Students meet degree and Oklahoma teacher certification requirements simultaneously. Students may major in the areas of art, elementary, early childhood, vocal and instrumental music, speech and drama, math, science, social studies, English, French, German, Spanish or health and physical education. In addition, we offer a Master of Education degree in elementary, early childhood, TESOL education and professional counseling.

ACTIVE INVOLVEMENT

The faculty models active learning with strategies such as interactive discussions, role-playing, demonstrations, experiments and problem solving. An important component of teacher preparation is "on-site" experiences in public school classrooms. From the very beginning you will be involved in field experiences specially selected by our faculty to ensure the best possible learning environment. Final preparation for becoming a teacher culminates in a full semester of student teaching. The OCU teacher education program establishes a strong foundation on which to build a successful career in a variety of educational settings. At OCU we prepare teachers who can positively impact the lives of students of all ages and influence the future of our country.
