Elementary Education - Plan of Study

The early childhood programs are designed to meet the needs of graduate students with diverse levels of expertise in the field. The programs provide a knowledge base for early childhood educators that will empower them to develop quality early childhood programs in different specialty areas. Students will be able to communicate the characteristics of developmentally appropriate curriculum to peers, parents, and administrators. Current issues, theory, and research at the forefront in the different fields of early childhood are incorporated in the different courses of study.

There are three trackes designed to meet the needs of students seeking Masters' degree in elementary education. To qualify for the program, students must hold a bachelor's degree to be eligible for program admission. Students must have previously completed an undergraduate program in high standing.

II. Program Options  
ECED-Option 1 Requirements: Early Childhood Generalist  
This program is designed to meet the individual needs of the student seeking a masters degree in early childhood education. The course of study is designed to provide program options for each student. The following courses are required to total: 24 hrs

This program leads to Montessori certification. The following courses are required with an additional two-semester practicum experience at a site that is AMS approved. The following courses are required to total: 23 hrs

The elementary education program has been designed to develop a mastery knowledge base to prepare the educator for leadership roles in the 21st century. The programs have a strong theoretical base of curricula and current research. The emphasis in the program will be on preparing teachers for collaboration and mentoring. Effective teaching strategies will be refined at the critical and analytical level. Teachers will be able to apply current strategies to reflective teaching as well as develop leadership skills to participate successfully as leaders in the educational community.
