Course and Other Degree Requirements

FOR MA CANDIDATES:

To acquire the degree, a candidate must complete 36 credit-hour graduate coursework (12 courses) and pass a comprehensive examination.

Courses:

1. Five required TESOL Core Courses:
TESL 5013: The English Language: Structure and Usage
TESL 5103: Studies in Linguistics
TESL 5423: Theory and Methods of TESOL
TESL 5513: ESL/EFL Assessment
TESL 6873: TESOL Practicum.

One Required Research Course:
GRED 6903: Methods of Research

One Writing Course Required for All International Students
GRED 5003: Research and Writing

2. Cultural Studies (Select a minimum of one course)
TESL 5313: American Culture through American Literature
TESL 6113: Intercultural communication
TESL 6363: Language and Culture

3. Specific Areas of Linguistics/Language Teaching (Select a minimum of two)
TESL 5113: American English Phonology
TESL 5413: Instructional Strategies in Writing
TESL 5713: Psycholinguistics
TESL 6103: Foundations of Reading

4. Educational Foundation Courses (Select a minimum of one)
GRED 5513: Multi-cultural Concepts
GRED 6513: Sociological Foundations of Education
GRED 6813: Psychological Foundations of Education

5. Electives (Maximum of two courses but One for International Students)

Comprehensive Examination:
During the last semester of coursework, candidates must take and pass the Comprehensive Examination.

Thesis Option
In lieu of one three-hour elective course, a candidate who meets the following requirements may elect to write a thesis (TESL 6983): 1) Possessing a minimum GPA of 3.75, 2) Having completed the Methods of Research course with a grade of at least an A (not an A-) in the course and an A on the research proposal, 3) (for international students) possessing a minimum TOEFL score of 600, a minimum TWE score of 5, and an acceptable performance on a essay administered by the thesis committee.

FOR CERTIFICATE CANDIDATES:

For certificate candidates, the following 6 TESOL core courses (18 credit hours) are the only requirement:

* TESL 5013: The English Language: Structure and Usage
* TESL 5103: Studies in Linguistics
* TESL 5423: Theory and Methods of TESOL
* TESL 5513: ESL/EFL Assessment
* TESL 6363: Language and Culture
* TESL 6873: TESOL Practicum.
* And any one of the TESOL cultural studies or specific linguistics/skills courses
