About our Program
Reasons to study Chemistry or Biochemistry
The Department of Chemistry offers Bachelor of Science degree programs in chemistry and biochemistry and a minor program in chemistry. The minor is strongly suggested for students of other majors who are interested in the medical professions.

The B.S. in chemistry program is designed to provide a strong foundation for professional employment as well as for graduate studies in science and in medicine. The B.S. in biochemistry provides an excellent background in chemistry, biology, and biochemistry.
Oklahoma City University chemistry and biochemistry graduates have a long tradition of admissions to medical programs. Others have furthered their studies by earning Ph.D. degrees; Oklahoma City University chemistry and biochemistry graduates have been recruited for admission by prestigious graduate programs throughout the United States. Graduates who elect to enter the work force often can find positions with employers such as the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center, the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, and the Oklahoma State Department of Environmental Quality. Additionally, there are a number of smaller companies in the Oklahoma City area that hire chemists. Chemistry and biochemistry graduates often pursue opportunities in nonscientific areas such as business and law; the skills learned by studying the chemical sciences provide an excellent foundation for professions outside of science.
Why Study Chemistry or Biochemistry at OCU?
 - Chemistry and Biochemistry are excellent curricula for preparing for careers in Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Veterinary Medicine.
- OCU offers smaller classes sizes. Rarely will a class be larger than 24 students.
- We have experienced, caring faculty who are focused on teaching and student success.
- Our laboratory courses are taught by faculty members, not by graduate students.
- There is a friendly atmosphere in which students help each other and close interaction between the Chemistry and Biology departments in the Biochemistry program.
Faram Wins National Fellowship - May 2008
Congratulations to biochemistry senior Ronnie Faram on winning a national fellowship from the Phi Kappa Phi honor society. The fellowship will give Faram $5,000 toward his graduate program. He is the first OCU student to achieve this honor. Be sure to congratulate Ronnie next time you see him!
