PhD in Justice Studies, Arizona State University

Julie Cowgill received her Ph.D in Justice and Social Inquiry from Arizona State University in 2005. Her areas of interests include popular culture, women and crime, victimization, gender and identity, and urban youth culture and identity. She has taught classes in statistics, research methods, women, law and social control, social deviance, family violence, and social theory.

Professor Cowgill has co-authored chapters Nancy C. Jurik in Bootstrap Dreams: U.S. Microenterprise Development in an Era of Microenterprise Reform (by Nancy C. Jurik) and Deserving and Entitled: Social Constructions and Public Policy (by Anne Schneider and Helen Ingram, Eds.). Dr. Cowgill has presented papers at various national conferences including: the American Sociological Association, American Criminology Association, the Society for the Study of Social Problems, and the Pacific Sociological Association. She is active in the Society for the Study of Social Problems (SSSP) and has served as a student representative to the board of directors, and as chair of the Accessibility (2005-2006) and Standards and Freedom of Research, Publication, and Teaching (2003-2004) committees.
