Service Learning and Internship Programs
Part of the Mission of Oklahoma City University is to foster civic responsibility. The Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice achieve this initiative through their Service Learning and Internship programs. Like all OCU students, sociology and criminal justice students must complete a Service Learning course. In addition, we require all our criminal justice students to complete an internship. Your educational experiences in both the academic and the real world are brought together in such programs.
Through our programs we have had students working with such agencies as the Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism, The Oklahoma City Bombing Memorial, and the Oklahoma City Police Athletic Leagure. Our students take what they have learned in the classroom and through reciprocal learning applied it to the real world.
We have also placed students at agencies outside Oklahoma City. We had a student interning at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian during the semester it opened. This was through the Washington Center internship program. The Washington Center internship offers students the opportunity to intern at many branches of the federal government in Washington, D.C.
Students have the opportunity to earn college credit hours for their internship service. Students must work forty hours for each college credit and attend a bi-monthly learning community.
