Political Science
Young Democrats

The Oklahoma City University Young Democrats strive to be an active and noticeable presence on campus. We like to consider ourselves to be a resource for students who have an interest in the world around them and in the political process. Members of the OCU Young Democrats have access to the Oklahoma Democratic Party, the Young Democrats of America, and contacts with elected officials and candidates due to our chapter’s activities and connections.

Alumni of our chapter have gone on to do great things and to be assets in their community. Many politicians in Oklahoma are OCU alumni. In the last decade chapter presidents past and present have accomplished much. One past president has gone on to be the executive director of the national organization. Several of our current and past members are active in either Oklahoma politics or in the Washington D. C. political community.

Phi Alpha Delta (Pre-Law) & New Moot Court Competition Team

OCU’s Phi Alpha Delta, Pre-Law organization provides all students with the opportunity to join other students of similar interests in a more social atmosphere. Our goal is to build lasting relationships amongst ourselves as well as to better assist and inform our future professionals of tomorrow on their way to success.

This semester, we will display our commitment to these goals by continuing existing traditions and building new ones. We are already planning events such as law school tours, a law school open forum, sponsorship of guest speakers, and several social activities throughout the semester. OCU’s Phi Alpha Delta is an organization on the rise and promises to provide a meaningful experience to all those associated!

The Oklahoma Intercollegiate Legislature is the largest and oldest intercollegiate student legislative organization in the United States. O.I.L. was created in 1969 by then Lt. Governor of the State of Oklahoma, George Nigh “to provide an organization in which students can learn the legislative process and practical problems of state government” (Preamble, original O.I.L. Constitution). These goals are accomplished each semester of the academic year, as hundreds of students from around the state of Oklahoma gather to simulate the governmental process. Students participate in the House of Representatives, the Senate, the Executive branch and the Supreme Court.

The majority of the work goes on in the Senate and House of Representatives, where the delegates from the various schools meet to debate legislation they bring. Legislation can take the form of simple resolutions, where the body would express an opinion, or a bill, which would change law. Topics that are debated are only limited to the imagination of the delegates. These sessions meet in the appropriate chambers of the state capitol for five legislative days each semester.

O.I.L. also consists of a competition, where all the delegations compete for the overall award of Best Delegation. The trophy is a three-foot tall traveling trophy that goes to the Best Delegation each session during an award ceremony held in the final Joint Session on Sunday afternoon. Performance in the House, the Senate, and the Moot Court competition are awarded through individual awards and totaled to determine the Best Delegation award.

Winning is a tradition for OCU students! And Oklahoma City University is a name well recognized at the O.I.L. competition. In the past we have always been a force to be reckoned with; sweeping awards in Best Legislation, Best Freshman and Best Delegation in both chambers. Join the O.I.L. experience today and become a part of the best organization on campus. For further information contact:
