United Way of Central Oklahoma
Dr. Robert L. Spinks, a native Oklahoman, is the President and Chief Executive Officer for United Way of Central Oklahoma. Prior to assuming this responsibility in 2001, he served as Executive Director of the Community Council of Central Oklahoma, the regional research and planning organization for the non-profit community. Bob attended Oklahoma State University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in music education in 1973, and masters (1978) and doctoral (1980) degrees in educational administration. A lifetime worker with youth, he was a public school band and choir director early in his career, and later served as a professional with the Last Frontier Council, Boy Scouts of America for 16 years.
At United Way, he is responsible for leading a staff of 30 and a volunteer force of hundreds in securing the dollars necessary to meet community needs through the work of local member agencies. In addition, the United Way is actively involved in a wide variety of community initiatives to seek permanent solutions to major challenges. During his nine-year tenure at United Way, the organization has significantly increased its annual campaign results, now raising over $20,000,000 to support the work of 60 partner agencies in the metro area.
Bob serves on the boards of many nonprofit and educational organizations in Central Oklahoma, including: Leadership Oklahoma City, the Youth Leadership Exchange (YLX), Epworth Villa, the OU College of Public Health, the Better Business Bureau, and the Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits. He has also served as an Adjunct Professor for Oklahoma Christian University, Oklahoma State University, and Southeastern Oklahoma State University.
Recently, Bob was honored as a finalist for the Journal Record’s recognition as one of Oklahoma’s Most Admired CEOs, having been nominated by the staff at United Way. Bob has announced that 2010 will be his final year at United Way. Effective January, 2011, he will join the faculty at Oklahoma City University to become the Director of the new Master of Arts program in Applied Sociology emphasizing nonprofit leadership.
Bob has been married to Pam for over 37 years. They have two grown children, one Grand Dog, and a housecat who rules their home.
