Miss Black OCU Pageant

Greetings! My name is Michelle Millben and I am Miss Black OCU 2005 and Miss Black Oklahoma 2005.
I entered the Miss Black Oklahoma contest as the reigning Miss Black Oklahoma City University (OCU). I graduated Cum Laude in May of 2005 with my Bachelors degree in Music with a minor in Business Administration. During my time at Oklahoma City University I was exposed to many opportunities to give back to the community and practice servant leadership. I began working as the full time youth pastor at Rock Solid Youth Ministries at Cathedral of Praise in Oklahoma City while completing my degree. I also started my own non-profit called “The Brotherhood and Girlfriends” which uses sports and the performing arts to encourage and motivate young people to be disciplined and excel in their academic and personal lives. Through OCU I organized a Dance-a-thon which raised nearly $1,000.00 for Tsunami relief. I also taught children in low-income elementary schools the beauty of music through a program called “We’ve Got Rhythm.” I am also the current Freshman Advisor for the Clara Luper Scholarship Program and one of the administrators of Oklahoma City University’s OHLAP outreach program.
I did not come to be Miss Black Oklahoma on my own. Wonderful servant leaders have set the bar high for those to follow. Ron S. Dryden, the senior pastor at Cathedral of Praise, has a large heart for developing the community both spiritually and economically. Oklahoma City University President Tom McDaniel and his first lady Brenda have a strong passion for servant leadership. It is with them in mind that I have developed my mission to positively impact the lives of others.
As Miss Black Oklahoma my message is for everyone, but there is a special place in my heart for youth. I hope to travel throughout the state carrying my message of a life of “No Limits.” If you view the youth generation today you are sure to notice the barriers that limit their progress across the board.
1. Lack of Education 2. Lack of Involved Parenting 3. Lack of Understanding of Consequential Behavior 4. Lack of Community Investment With this epidemic of apathy sweeping our nation
I am compelled to use my time as Miss Black Oklahoma to take advantage of mentoring opportunities and instill in young people a sense of the positive effects of a good education, an understanding of the consequences of irresponsible behavior, and the importance of being servant leaders in their own communities.
Young people need to understand the enormous positive effect they can have on their communities no matter what their gifts and interests are and that they can reach the goals they set for themselves through hard work and a responsible lifestyle. Thank you for your consideration and your interest in the youth community.
Sincerely,
Michelle J. Millben
