Q: Do I need an appointment?

A: If you wish to see the Nurse Practitioner, an appointment is the best way to ensure that you will see her in a timely manner. Walk-in patients are seen on a first-come, first-served basis and are usually seen first by the Nurse. Every effort is made for walk-in patients to see the Nurse the same day the patient presents to the clinic. Appointment times are from 8:30 - 11:00 am and 1:00 pm - 4:15 pm. Students should come to the clinic prior to 4:20 pm to be seen the same day.

Q: Will it cost anything?

A: A visit with the Nurse is free. If you need to be seen by the Nurse Practitioner (for a prescription or for a more detailed visit) there will be a $15.00 charge. There may be additional charges for lab work and medications. Check with the Nurse or Nurse Practitioner about additional charges.

Q: I have my parent's health insurance, will you file my visit with my insurance?

A: No, most of the charges are very small (if any). We do not have the ability or resources to file with individual health insurances. If you have the student health insurance (Academic Health Plans), we will file for you.

Q: I have the student health insurance. Will I still have to pay the $15.00 to see the Nurse Practitioner?

A: No, we will file all of the eligible fees to Academic Health Plans.

Q: Can you draw blood for lab tests at the Student Health Clinic?

A: Yes, we recently added phlebotomy (blood draws) to our services. There is a $5.00 draw fee and we will send the blood specimen to the appropriate laboratory. A doctor's order is needed for all blood draws. The Nurse Practitioner can order necessary blood tests during an appointment.

Q: What can a Nurse Practitioner do?

A: Among their many services, Nurse Practitioners (NPs):

  • Order, perform and interpret diagnostic tests such as lab work and x-rays
  • Diagnose & treat acute and chronic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, infections and injuries
  • Prescribe medications and other treatments
  • Manage a patient's care

Q: What can the Nurse do for me?

A: A Registered Nurse can help you make informed decisions about your heath care including when to see a doctor or Nurse Practitioner or when to use over-the-counter medicine. There are a variety of over-the-counter medicines that the nurse can dispense for no charge.

Q: What if I just want medicine and don't want to see the Nurse?

A: The Student Health Clinic has a Medicine Shop available to all OCU Students, Staff, and Faculty. It includes a lot of common over-the-counter medications that are available for a small fee. The prices are competitive with Wal-Mart and Walgreen's for similar or the same item.
