LET'S PRETEND PLAYERS
During the school year, the award-winning Let’s Pretend Players –a program of OCU Theatre—presents a play appropriate for 1st through 12th grade students and adults of all ages. The play is comprised of dramatizations of stories from cultures the world over; it’s an exciting, entertaining, educational, and unique multicultural theatre experience.
The Let’s Pretend Players perform ONLY on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and ONLY during the school year. The Let’s Pretend Players is a touring company, so they will come to your school. All we need to perform is a large, open space, such as a gym, cafeteria, or multipurpose room floor; we bring everything else we need. The actors lay down a border to mark a square and your students will sit on the floor surrounding the actors. The actors seat the audience. Teachers and adult chaperons can either sit on the floor with the students or sit in chairs among the students; we do require that teachers stay with their classes. We have been staging plays in this way for nearly 40 years in elementary, middle, junior high and high schools, even colleges—this arrangement, combined with our professional presentation and the Study Guides/Teacher Resources Packets we send to you, never fails. How much does this cost? You are charged for each performance we do. For each performance we do you must count the students in the audience. If there are 99 or fewer students in the audience your cost is $150.00 for that performance. If there are 100 or more students in the audience your cost is $1.50 per student for that performance.
You are responsible for taking a head count; all teachers, administrators, and adult chaperones attend at no cost so are not included in the head count. As you will be taking a head count on the day we perform, we DO NOT expect payment on the day we come to your school.
Because it becomes difficult to see and hear the actors if there are too many students in the audience, we ask that there be no more than approximately 150-160 audience members at one time. We also ask that you allow at least 20 minutes between shows (if we are doing more than one show for you) so that we have enough time to answer students’ questions and get students in and out of the space in an orderly fashion. Finally, because performing is physically and mentally exhausting, we ask that you schedule no more than three shows in any one day.
How do you schedule a Let’s Pretend Players Performance? Call the Department of Theatre at Oklahoma City University, September through April, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00p.m., at (405) 208-5121 or toll free at 1-800-633-7242, and ask for extension 5121. If you get a recording, that means we are on the phone or away from our desk—please leave your name, your school, your area code, phone number, and a message.
What is a “Study Guide/Teacher Resource Packet” and how do you get them? Once you have scheduled a Let’s Pretend Players performance, each teacher bringing a class or group to the play will be sent one Study Guide/Teacher resource Packet. The Study Guide/Teacher resource Packet contains information to share with students and pre-show activities to assign to students before the day of the show. These guides also contain post-show activities you can assign to students or do along with them after the show is over. All the information and every activity is correlated to the Oklahoma Core Curriculum – PASS. The guides are designed to enhance, enrich, and extend the theatre experience and connect the play to the curriculum.
How do you pay? The Let’s Pretend Players will send you a bill when we send you the Study Guides/Teacher Resource Packets. Payment is due in the manner and time frame that is convenient for your school, but no later than June 30th.
