Eligibility to Study Abroad
Studying abroad takes planning and preparation. To avoid unnecessary stress, give yourself at least a year to prepare. A lack of planning not only limits options, it also limits access to many scholarships that may have deadlines of up to a year in advance of program start dates. Some programs, such as short-term summer programs and faculty-led study abroad tours have shorter deadlines, but popular programs and internship placements abroad may reach capacity enrollment six months or more before their start dates.
We expect students who study abroad to uphold the academic and behavioral standards enforced here on campus. To be approved for a study abroad program, students must meet the following criteria:
- Possess and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0
- Students with a 2.50 to 2.99 will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
- Be in good standing with the university
- Have completed at least one year of full-time study at Oklahoma City University by the time of departure
- The university reserves the right to refuse any student's request to study abroad based on conduct, health, or other considerations.
Requirements After Acceptance
Once students are approved to study abroad by Oklahoma City University, there are several requirements that must be met in order to stay in good standing with the Office of Global Engagement. All study abroad participants must:
- Attend a pre-departure orientation. Sessions are scheduled once or twice each semester, and participants will be advised of specific orientation dates.
- Complete all enrollment forms at least 30 university business days prior to departure. This is particularly important for all students who are awarded an OCU study abroad scholarship. Students who do not complete all required forms by the deadline may forfeit their scholarship.
