Semester in Spain: Institute for the Arts Barcelona

About the Program

The Institute for the Arts Barcelona (IAB) Study Abroad Semester program provides a unique and exciting opportunity to enhance students performing arts skills at Europe’s only International Performing Arts Institution and at the same time experience a new culture in one of the world’s most cosmopolitan cities. IAB is a truly international institution, with students and staff representing over 35 different nationalities, giving Study Abroad students the opportunity to befriend like-minded artists from all over the world.

Quick Facts

• The town of Sitges, where IAB is located, is known as "The Jewel of the Mediterranean.

• Sitges offers easy access to the city of Barcelona and the Barcelona airport--both by train.

• While just 30 minutes from Barcelona, Sitges offers a small-town experience with a population of just under 30,000 people.

• Students are housed at Utopia, a student residence that is walking distance from IAB, the beach, the train station, and the town center of Sitges

• IAB is fully accredited by Liverpool John Marshall University in the UK

• The student to faculty ratio at IAB is 12:1.

Credits/Classes

Students earn 15 US credit hours per semester at IAB

IAB offers three tracks for study abroad students:

All study abroad students at IAB are in at least one performance during their semester of study.

Accommodation

Students live at Utopia, a student residence within walking distance of IAB. Utopia is equipped with a shared kitchen, common areas, a garden terrace, and coffee shop/bar. The rooms are shared and offer basic amenities, but the location is exceptional.

Fees

Fall Semester 2019

Charged to OKCU Student Account:

  • OKCU tuition and fees.

Invoiced to student by IAB:

  • On-campus housing: $4,000
  • Housing deposit: $2,000 (half of the housing fee)

Additional costs that students pay directly:

  • Round-trip Airfare
  • Medical Insurance: OKCU's travel policy may be sufficient. Students should research options based on personal needs.
  • Passport and/or visa fees
  • Local transportation, including travel to and from airport
  • Meals: A meal plan is not offered, but students have kitchen facilities in their housing, as well as a small coffee shop on campus.
  • Personal expenses

Spring Semester 2020

Charged to OKCU Student Account:

  • OKCU tuition and fees.

Invoiced to student by IAB:

  • On-campus housing: TBA
  • Housing deposit: half of the housing fee

Eligibility

Eligibility

  • Sophomore standing or above
  • Must be at least 18 years of age at beginning of program
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA (Students with a 2.50 to 2.99 will be considered on a case-by-case basis.)
  • Good standing with OKCU
  • Demonstrated ability in the area of study selected. Generally a transcript assessment will satisfy this requirement.

Scholarships and Financial Aid

  • Federal and State Aid typically apply
  • Most OKCU scholarships apply

  • The IAB Teaching Facilities

    Working days at the IAB are full and intense, classes last 1 hour 30 minutes and students can have anything between 2 and 6 classes a day.

  • Acting

    Studying Abroad at the IAB gives you the chance to perfect your craft with expert teachers and visiting performers, while being fully immersed in one of the richest cultures in the world.

  • Performing

    IAB offers study abroad students a chance to enrich their education with refreshing perspectives on theatre and dance and develop as a person and a performer.

  • Utopia

    Study abroad students live in Utopia, a student residence that is within blocks of the IAB campus, the beach, and the center of Sitges.
