About the Program

IHECS, Institut des Hautes Ėtudes des Communications Sociales (the Institute for Higher Social Communication Studies) is based in the heart of Brussels’ Center City. Since 1958, IHECS has offered training in the field of journalism and communication by linking together media theory and practice. With a foot in the present and looking towards the future, IHECS seeks to adjust its teaching methods to professional practices. In order to do this, it focuses on a project-based learning approach. IHECS trains future press and communication professionals by offering different bachelor's and master's degrees, including: journalism (press and information); advertising; public relations; sociocultural activities and lifelong learning; media literacy and event management. Nestled in the center of the European capital, IHECS is an open school integrating European features via several of its training paths and numerous projects. IHECS has agreements with nearly 100 colleges and universities located throughout the world.

• IHECS has an enrollment of 2300 students

• Study abroad students are encouraged to spend the fall semester at IHECS due to its more extensive programming, a full French immersion week, and greater course selection for incoming students.

• Study abroad students may study courses in English, in French, or may study French language while also studying courses in English.

• Belgium is a trilingual country with people speaking French, Dutch, and German. In the city of Brussels, most people speak French, Dutch, and English

Credits/Classes

Students enroll in 15 credit hours at IHECS. Students who don't speak French will enroll in the English language courses which include an array of lecture/seminar courses and hands-on courses in which IHECS degree-seeking students also enroll. Students with Advanced French, based on a placement test, may enroll in courses taught in French.

Accommodations

Students generally share apartments in Brussels with IHECS students, often subletting the room of a student who is studying abroad for the semester. As most IHECS students go abroad for the fall semester of their junior year, OKCU students are encouraged to study at IHECS during the fall semester.

While IHECS does not provide housing, the international office assists students with finding housing in the city.

Fees

Fall Semester 2019

Charged to OKCU Student Account:

  • OKCU tuition and fees.

Additional costs that students pay directly:

  • Round-trip Airfare
  • Airport Pick-Up: A train from the airport to Brussels Central Station is about $15 and takes 20 minutes to the center of the city. It runs every 10 minutes from 5:00 am to midnight, 7 days a week.
  • Housing: IHECS does not provide housing directly to students, but will assist students in finding an apartment.
  • Passport and/or visa fees
  • Medical Insurance: OKCU's travel policy may be sufficient. Students should research options based on personal needs.
  • Local transportation: approximately $75
  • Meals: A meal plan is not offered, but students have kitchen facilities in their housing.
  • Personal expenses

Eligibility

  • Sophomore standing or above at beginning of program
  • Must be at least 18 years of age at beginning of program
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA (Students with a 2.50 to 2.99 will be considered on a case-by-case basis.)
  • Good standing with OKCU
  • Students interested in the French program must achieve B1 level in French

Scholarships and Financial Aid

  • Most OKCU scholarships apply
  • Gilman Scholarship (for Pell recipients only)
